L.A. spoils Tiger's return, tops Jupiter Links for inaugural TGL title

Key keywords: TGL 2024 Championship, Los Angeles Golf Club, Tiger Woods comeback, Jupiter Links Golf Club, TGL inaugural season, Tiger Woods return, indoor golf league, PGA Tour The inaugural Technology-infused Golf League (TGL) season wrapped up with a historic, high-stakes final on Sunday, where Los Angeles Golf Club (LAGC) spoiled Tiger Woods’ highly anticipated return to competitive play, edging out Woods’ co-founded Jupiter Links Golf Club 11-8 to claim the first-ever TGL title in front of a sold-out crowd at the league’s custom-built Florida arena. Woods, 48, had been sidelined from competitive golf for eight months following ankle fusion surgery after withdrawing from the 2023 Masters Tournament. His last-minute addition to Jupiter Links’ final roster sent ticket prices surging 300% in 48 hours, with more than 200,000 fans joining a virtual waitlist to access the livestream, as viewers across the globe tuned in to watch the 15-time major champion’s first competitive start of 2024. The final followed TGL’s signature fast-paced mixed format, combining individual stroke play holes, team scramble rounds and modified match play segments designed to boost fan engagement and cut down on traditional golf’s slow pace. Jupiter Links got off to a blistering start in the opening six individual holes, with Woods carding back-to-back birdies on the par-3 2nd and par-4 3rd to put his team up 4-1 early. Justin Thomas, Woods’ long-time friend and Jupiter Links co-captain, added another birdie on the 5th to extend the lead, as LAGC struggled to find rhythm on the arena’s high-tech, undulating simulator greens. The tide shifted dramatically in the second segment’s team scramble round, where LAGC’s all-star roster of Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Max Homa combined for three consecutive birdies before Schauffele sunk a 47-foot eagle putt on the virtual par-5 9th hole to put LAGC up 7-6 heading into the final match play segment. Morikawa sealed the win for LAGC with a 12-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole, putting his team up by 3 points with only one hole left to play, a deficit Jupiter Links could not overcome even with Woods’ late birdie on the final par-4 16th. Woods, who finished the final with a 3-under par score across his individual holes, remained upbeat in his post-match press conference. “It’s definitely frustrating to come up short, especially in the first ever TGL final, but I’m really encouraged by how my body held up today,” he said, confirming he plans to compete in the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National in two weeks. TGL officials reported that the final drew 3.2 million linear viewers, making it the most-watched non-major golf broadcast of the past decade, validating the league’s tech-forward, fan-focused format ahead of its planned 12-team expansion in 2025.

As a long-time Tiger fan, I was just so happy to see him swinging pain-free out there today. The loss stings, but if he’s putting this well already, he’s absolutely a dark horse for the Masters next week. Can’t wait to see what he does at Augusta!

That 47-foot eagle putt from Schauffele was the shot of the entire season! LAGC played like a well-oiled machine the entire final, they 100% earned that title. Already counting down to next season to see if they can go back-to-back.

I never thought I’d be this obsessed with a golf league, but TGL’s format is so much more engaging than regular tour events. The pace is faster, the player interactions are more fun, and having Tiger come back for the final was the perfect end to an amazing first season.

Jupiter Links had such a strong run this entire season, it’s a bummer they couldn’t pull off the win. Tiger and JT’s on-course chemistry is unmatched, though, I have no doubt they’ll be hoisting the TGL trophy next year.
