The departure of long-time starting left guard Jonah Jackson in 2024 free agency, who signed a multi-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams, left many Lions fans concerned about a potential gap in the team’s interior offensive line, a unit widely credited as one of the core drivers of the Lions’ offensive success over the past two seasons. But general manager Brad Holmes moved quickly to shore up the group, signing 12-year veteran offensive guard Kevin Zeitler, a 2023 Pro Bowl alternate who spent the past three seasons anchoring the Baltimore Ravens’ interior line, to a one-year deal, while retaining versatile veteran Graham Glasgow, who started 15 games across both guard spots for the Lions in 2023. The pair of established veterans are not the only candidates in the guard rotation, however. 2023 third-round draft pick Colby Sorsdal, who appeared in 11 games as a rookie and earned positive marks for his run blocking in limited starts, has made noticeable strides during spring practices, while undrafted free agent signee Christian Mahogany out of Boston College has already turned heads with his physicality and quick understanding of the Lions’ offensive scheme. Speaking to reporters after a recent OTA practice, Campbell emphasized that no player has a locked-in starting spot at guard ahead of training camp. “This is exactly what I asked for,” Campbell told reporters. “We’ve got four guys right now who could walk in and start for a majority of NFL teams, and they’re all fighting for two spots. Nobody gets to coast, nobody gets to rely on their resume to keep their job. That’s the kind of environment that makes teams better.” Offensive line coach Hank Fraley echoed Campbell’s sentiment, noting that the daily competition has already pushed players to fix gaps in their technique that they may have otherwise ignored. The Lions are coming off their deepest playoff run in more than 30 years, and the added depth at offensive guard is viewed as a critical piece of the team’s 2024 push to win their first Super Bowl title, giving the team reliable fallback options if any starter suffers an injury during the regular season or playoffs.
