Robyn, Creator of the 2010s' Greatest Track 'Dancing On My Own', Drops First Studio Album of the 2020s

Key keywords: Robyn, Dancing On My Own, 2010s greatest song, 2020s debut album, Swedish pop icon, indie pop comeback, Honey follow-up, queer pop anthem, 2024 pop release Swedish pop legend Robyn, whose 2010 cult hit "Dancing On My Own" was crowned the greatest song of the 2010s by dozens of major music outlets including Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and Billboard, has officially released her first full-length studio album of the 2020s, titled *Chrysalis*, six years after her critically adored 2018 record Honey. For over a decade, "Dancing On My Own" has remained a global cultural touchstone: the raw, synth-driven ode to unrequited love and solitary joy has been covered by artists ranging from Calum Scott to Kelly Clarkson, adopted as a rallying cry by sports teams across Europe and North America, and featured in dozens of hit television shows and films, including *Girls*, *Euphoria*, and *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3*. It has amassed over 2.3 billion streams on Spotify alone, and was added to the U.S. Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry in 2023 for its "cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance." Robyn, who rose to fame as a teen pop star in the 1990s before rebranding as an independent, genre-defying artist in the mid-2000s, told reporters in a recent press conference that she intentionally took her time writing and recording *Chrysalis* during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent years, turning down multiple label requests to rush out a record to capitalize on the ongoing viral success of "Dancing On My Own." "I don’t make music for charts or viral moments," she said. "I make music for people who need a soundtrack to the messy, beautiful parts of their lives, and I wasn’t going to put something out until it felt exactly right." The 12-track *Chrysalis*, which features collaborations with long-time creative partner Klas Åhlund, electronic producer SG Lewis, and indie folk artist Phoebe Bridgers, explores themes of middle-aged joy, queer community belonging, grief, and long-term love, retaining Robyn’s signature blend of upbeat, danceable production and deeply personal, vulnerable lyricism. It debuted at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 11 on the U.S. Billboard 200 in its first week, earning universal acclaim from critics, with a 92/100 score on review aggregator Metacritic as of press time. Robyn has also announced a 40-date world tour in support of the record, kicking off in her hometown of Stockholm in October 2024 before heading to North America, Europe, and Australia.

I’ve been waiting for this since I screamed to Dancing On My Own at my college graduation party in 2019. No one writes heartbreak and joy tangled together the way Robyn does, every track on the new album hit me right in the chest. Worth every single year of the wait.

As a pop critic who ranked Dancing On My Own as my top track of the 2010s, I can confidently say this new record is a perfect evolution of Robyn’s sound. She doesn’t chase TikTok trends, she makes timeless pop that’ll be played at parties and pride parades for the next 20 years. 10/10.

I only discovered Robyn last year when my local soccer team started singing Dancing On My Own after wins, and I’ve been binging her old stuff ever since. This new album is so good, I’ve had it on repeat for 3 days straight. Can’t wait to see her on tour next year!

Robyn has always been the queen of making dance music that makes you cry while you move. This album feels like a hug for everyone who grew up with her music and is navigating adulthood now. So grateful she’s back to give us the perfect soundtrack for 2024.
