Popular Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney, best known for her leading roles in hit series *Euphoria* and *The White Lotus*, made viral headlines this week when she publicly expressed heartfelt gratitude to all U.S. troops serving overseas, with a special, personal shoutout to her younger brother Trent, who is currently on an active-duty deployment with the U.S. Air Force.
During a recent red carpet interview ahead of her new romantic comedy premiere, Sweeney opened up about her family’s experience having a loved one deployed abroad, noting that her brother has been stationed outside of the country for nearly nine months, with limited contact with family back home. “We do a group FaceTime with him every Sunday if his schedule allows, but there are weeks we go without hearing from him because of his mission requirements,” Sweeney shared. “It’s really hard, especially when there are family birthdays, holidays, or little everyday moments we wish he could be here for, but we’re so endlessly proud of him and the work he’s doing to serve our country.”
The actress went on to explain that seeing her brother’s dedication, and hearing stories from his fellow airmen about their own sacrifices of leaving behind partners, children, and close friends to serve, inspired her to partner with the USO to launch a care package drive for deployed troops across all military branches. The care packages will include comfort snacks from home, popular movies and TV show box sets, handwritten thank you notes from fans across the country, and signed merchandise from Sweeney’s projects, after she learned many of her brother’s unit members are long-time fans of her work.
“Every single one of these troops is putting their life on the line to keep us safe back home, and so often their hard work and sacrifices go completely unrecognized,” Sweeney said. “I just wanted to use whatever platform I have to let them know we see them, we appreciate every single thing they do, and we’re all counting down the days until they get to come home safe to their families.” She also confirmed that her brother was “shocked and so excited” when he saw her public message, and shared that his entire unit has already put in a group request for signed *Euphoria* posters, which she is happy to fulfill and ship out before the end of the month.

As the spouse of a Marine currently deployed to Okinawa, this message means more than I can put into words. So many public figures ignore the sacrifices our military families and servicemembers make every day, so seeing someone with Sydney’s huge platform lift this issue up is incredibly touching. My husband is a big fan of her work, and I already sent him the clip of her shoutout – he teared up a little, don’t tell him I said that!
U.S. Air Force veteran here, did two deployments to Afghanistan during my enlistment. I can’t explain how much a small gesture of recognition like this brightens your whole month when you’re thousands of miles from home, eating MREs and missing your family’s cooking. Props to Sydney for using her fame for good, and thank you to her brother for his service – stay safe out there.
I’ve been a fan of Sydney for years because of how unapologetically real she is, and this just makes me respect her even more. It’s so refreshing to see a celebrity talking about causes that matter to them instead of just promoting sponsored content all the time. I’m definitely signing up to write a thank you note for her USO care package drive this weekend.
My little brother is also in the Air Force, deployed to Germany right now too, so this story hit really close to home. It means a lot to see people outside of military circles acknowledging how hard these young men and women work, and how much they give up to serve our country. Thank you Sydney for giving our troops the recognition they deserve.
