South Korean game studio Pearl Abyss confirmed in an official press release this week that the core main development team behind the long-awaited open world action RPG Crimson Desert has been officially reassigned to work on the studio’s next unannounced title, following the full completion of all core game content for Crimson Desert.
First announced back in 2019, Crimson Desert has been one of the most anticipated 3A titles in the global gaming market for nearly 5 years, with multiple release date delays in previous years as the development team adjusted the game’s narrative framework, open world design and fluid skill-based combat mechanics to meet player expectations. The studio noted that the remaining work for Crimson Desert, including bug fixing, cross-platform optimization for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, localization in 18 languages, global content rating reviews and launch preparation, will be handed over to a specialized post-production and operations team that has been trained for this phase of work for over 6 months.
Pearl Abyss also reassured players that the previously announced 2025 second half global release window for Crimson Desert remains unchanged, and the team transfer is a pre-planned part of the studio’s development pipeline, not a response to any unforeseen issues with the game. The 18-minute gameplay demo showcased at The Game Awards 2023 received widespread positive feedback from both players and industry critics, with over 45 million views across social media platforms to date, and global pre-order numbers for the game have already surpassed 2.1 million units as of the end of July 2024.
Industry insiders revealed that the next title the core Crimson Desert team is working on will be a brand new IP that combines the strong persistent multiplayer mechanics from Pearl Abyss’s hit MMORPG Black Desert Online, and the cinematic single-player narrative design the team polished during Crimson Desert’s development, with cross-platform support planned for PC, current-gen consoles and leading cloud gaming services. The studio is expected to share the first official details about the new title in the fourth quarter of 2025, shortly after the official launch of Crimson Desert.

I’ve been hyped for Crimson Desert ever since its first reveal, so I was a little panicked when I saw the headline about the team moving projects. It’s such a relief to hear this is all part of the pre-planned schedule and the 2025 launch is still on track. The combat and open world in the TGA demo looked absolutely incredible, I already locked in my pre-order two months ago.
As someone who’s put thousands of hours into Black Desert Online, I’m so excited to hear their next project will mix MMO mechanics with the single-player storytelling they built for Crimson Desert. Pearl Abyss has always been amazing at making satisfying, weighty combat and immersive, detailed worlds, so this new IP could be a total game-changer if they pull it off properly.
This is such a smart operational move for Pearl Abyss from a business perspective. So many studios waste months of core dev team time waiting for post-production to wrap on a finished project, so reassigning them to start pre-production on the next title right after core content lock is a great way to keep their development pipeline moving efficiently. I just hope they still allocate enough resources to post-launch content updates for Crimson Desert, that’s the only potential downside I see here.
I was worried this meant Crimson Desert was getting abandoned or pushed back again, but the official statement makes total sense. Most big 3A studios operate this way now: the core creative team moves on once the main content is done, and the specialized support team handles the final tweaks, QA and launch. Can’t wait to see what they work on next, their track record with open world design is really solid.
