On Wednesday, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office officially released the identity of the motorcyclist killed in a two-vehicle collision over the weekend in Travelers Rest, marking the 12th traffic-related fatality in the county so far this year. The victim has been identified as 38-year-old Jacob Miller, a Greer, South Carolina resident who was pronounced dead at the crash scene on Saturday, April 13, shortly after 7:30 p.m.
According to initial reports from the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit, the crash occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 276 and Mountain View Road, a high-traffic corridor in northern Travelers Rest that sees heavy visitor traffic during spring and summer months as travelers head to nearby state parks, hiking trails and local craft breweries. Investigators say Miller was traveling northbound on his 2021 Harley-Davidson motorcycle when a 2019 Toyota RAV4, driven by a 62-year-old local Travelers Rest resident, attempted to make a left turn onto Mountain View Road and failed to yield the right of way to the oncoming motorcycle. The SUV struck the motorcycle directly on its driver’s side, ejecting Miller despite him wearing a Department of Transportation-certified helmet at the time of the collision.
Emergency responders arrived within six minutes of the first 911 call, but life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and Miller was declared dead at the scene by responding coroner staff. The driver of the SUV was uninjured, remained on the scene to cooperate with investigators, and initial field sobriety tests showed no signs of alcohol or drug impairment at the time of the crash.
The coroner’s office stated that an official autopsy has been scheduled for later this week to confirm the exact cause of death, which is preliminarily listed as blunt force trauma to the torso and head. Local transportation officials have also noted that they will be conducting a 30-day safety review of the intersection, which has seen 17 reported crashes, including three with serious injuries, over the past 24 months. Officials are urging all drivers to exercise extra caution when making turns at rural and suburban intersections, particularly as warmer spring weather leads to a 40% seasonal increase in motorcycle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic across the Upstate region. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage of the incident is asked to contact the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Investigation Unit at 864-467-5500.

I’ve lived in Travelers Rest for 12 years, and that intersection is an absolute death trap. We’ve been petitioning the county to install a protected left turn signal there for two years, and they keep brushing us off saying traffic volumes aren’t high enough. This tragedy could have been completely prevented if they’d listened to local residents sooner.
As a motorcycle rider who commutes through that stretch of 276 every workday, it’s heartbreaking to hear this news. So many drivers are distracted by their phones and never take the extra second to check for oncoming motorcycles before turning. My heart goes out to Jacob’s family and friends during this awful time.
It’s a relief that the driver is cooperating, but I hope investigators are thorough about looking into what caused them to fail to yield. No family should have to lose a loved one over a careless split-second decision, and there need to be appropriate consequences to deter this kind of negligence in the future.
