The hire comes three weeks after former head coach Pat Kelsey departed the role to lead the University of Louisville’s basketball program, ending his two-year tenure at Boston College that included the program’s first NIT appearance in 16 years. Murray, 39, has spent the past six seasons on Dan Hurley’s award-winning staff at UConn, where he played a core role in recruiting top-tier high school and transfer talent, designing adaptive offensive game plans, and developing NBA-bound players including Jordan Hawkins, Tristen Newton, and Donovan Clingan across the program’s historic 2023 and 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship runs. Widely named as one of the most promising young head coaching candidates in college basketball over the past two years, Murray had previously interviewed for head coaching openings at multiple Power 5 programs before committing to the Boston College role. In his official introductory press conference, Murray emphasized that his top priorities for the program will be retaining current core players, building a sustainable recruiting pipeline of elite talent across the Northeast, and establishing a physical, high-tempo playing style that can compete with top ACC programs including Duke, North Carolina, and Virginia. Boston College Athletic Director Blake James praised Murray in a public statement, noting that his proven track record of winning at the highest level of college basketball, combined with his natural leadership skills and national profile, made him the clear standout candidate from a pool of more than 30 applicants. The hire has already drawn widespread national attention, in no small part due to his father Bill Murray’s well-documented passion for college basketball. The elder Murray, who has been a regular, highly visible presence at UConn games for years, told reporters that he plans to attend every Boston College home game next season, and even teased that he might collaborate with the school’s student government to design game day promotions to boost atmosphere on the Chestnut Hill campus.

As a Boston College alum who’s suffered through 10 straight losing ACC seasons, this hire feels like a total breath of fresh air. Luke’s track record at UConn speaks for itself, and the fact that we’ll have Bill Murray in the stands for every home game? That’s just extra fun for the student section. I already bought my season tickets for next year.

People dismissing this hire because of Luke’s famous last name clearly haven’t been paying attention to college basketball over the past three years. So many of UConn’s top players have publicly credited him with their development, and he’s got one of the sharpest offensive minds in the sport right now. Boston College got a total steal here.

The ACC just got way more entertaining next season. Luke is going to attract top recruits way faster than people expect, especially with the national buzz around this hire. Don’t be shocked if BC makes it to the NCAA Tournament within three years. Also, can the league please schedule the first Duke vs BC game for prime time? A Bill Murray sideline interview would break viewing records.
