Tottenham Hotspur Pushing for Roberto De Zerbi Appointment as First-Choice Manager, The Athletic Confirms

Key keywords: Tottenham Hotspur, Roberto De Zerbi, The Athletic, Premier League managerial appointment, Brighton & Hove Albion, Ange Postecoglou successor, Daniel Levy, UEFA Champions League qualification According to an exclusive report from The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur have identified Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Roberto De Zerbi as their top candidate for the club’s vacant managerial position, with senior club officials already launching formal pursuit of the Italian tactician. The north London side opted to part ways with former boss Ange Postecoglou earlier this month after a dismal 10-game run that saw them drop out of the Premier League top four, suffer a shock FA Cup quarter-final exit to Championship side Leeds United, and lose three consecutive London derbies against Arsenal, West Ham and Chelsea. Interim manager Ryan Mason has overseen four games since Postecoglou’s departure, picking up just two points and failing to reverse the club’s sharp decline in form. The Athletic’s sources close to the negotiations reveal that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and sporting director Johan Lange have held initial positive talks with De Zerbi’s representatives over the past seven days, with the club ready to activate the £13 million release clause in De Zerbi’s Brighton contract, which runs until the summer of 2026. De Zerbi has built a stellar reputation across his two-and-a-half years on the south coast, guiding Brighton to their first ever European qualification, a sixth-place Premier League finish in 2023/24, and consistent wins against top-flight giants despite losing key first-team players including Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister to big-money transfers in successive windows. His signature high-pressing, attacking, possession-based style is viewed as a perfect fit for Tottenham’s fanbase, which has long demanded entertaining, front-foot football alongside a realistic push for silverware and Champions League football. De Zerbi is understood to be open to the move, but has requested formal written guarantees from Tottenham’s hierarchy over a minimum £150 million summer transfer budget, full control over first-team recruitment, and assurances that key players including Son Heung-min, James Maddison and Destiny Udogie will not be sold ahead of next season. The Athletic adds that Tottenham shortlisted several other high-profile candidates for the role, including former boss Mauricio Pochettino, Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim and ex-Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel, but De Zerbi emerged as the unanimous first choice after internal reviews of his track record of player development and overperformance on limited resources. Brighton are yet to receive an official written approach from Tottenham, but club officials at the Amex Stadium have already begun drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements in preparation for De Zerbi’s expected exit. If the appointment is finalized before the end of the current Premier League season, De Zerbi will be tasked with ending Tottenham’s 16-year major trophy drought, which stretches back to their 2008 League Cup final win over Chelsea.

As a lifelong Tottenham season ticket holder, this is the most optimistic I’ve felt about a managerial hire in a decade. De Zerbi’s football is exactly what we’ve begged Levy to bring to the club for years – he gets results while playing the kind of attacking, exciting football that matches our identity as a club. The only thing we need now is for Levy to actually give him the transfer backing and time he needs to build something long term, instead of sacking him after one bad run of results.

It hurts to lose De Zerbi as a Brighton fan, but we all knew this day was coming sooner or later. He turned our tiny club from a relegation battler to a regular European contender in less than three years, even when we sold our best players every summer. He’s worth every single penny of that £13 million release clause, and I hope Tottenham don’t try to negotiate it down – he’s earned that pay day and the chance to manage at a bigger club. All I can say is thank you for the memories, Rob.

This is such a perfect fit on paper that I’m almost shocked Levy didn’t try to hire him sooner. De Zerbi’s tactical system fits Tottenham’s squad perfectly – he loves fast wingers, technical midfielders and attacking full-backs, which is exactly what they already have in their first team. If he can get the best out of players like Richarlison and Brennan Johnson that underperformed under Postecoglou, Tottenham could easily be challenging for the top three next season. The only risk is Levy’s usual habit of interfering with transfers and sacking managers too quickly.

As a neutral Premier League fan, I’m so excited for this appointment. De Zerbi is one of the most interesting young managers in Europe right now, and watching him go up against Guardiola, Arteta and Klopp with a bigger budget at Tottenham is going to make next season’s title race even more entertaining. I just hope he doesn’t get chewed up and spat out by Levy like so many other Tottenham managers before him.
