Pre-game projections heavily favored the Braves, who returned their entire core lineup from the 2025 NL pennant-winning squad, but the Royals’ rebuilt roster and sharp pitching performance flipped the script on opening day. Royals left-hander Cole Ragans was the undisputed star of the night, turning in a career-best 7-inning start where he allowed just 1 run on 3 hits, notched 8 strikeouts, and walked only 1 batter. The only blemish on Ragans’ record came in the bottom of the 3rd inning, when Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies crushed a 2-2 fastball over the left-field wall for a solo home run that put Atlanta up 1-0 early. Kansas City’s offense responded immediately in the top of the 2nd inning, when shortstop and 2025 AL MVP finalist Bobby Witt Jr. laced a 2-run double down the right-field line off Braves ace Spencer Strider, driving in outfielder Dairon Blanco and first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino to give the Royals a 2-1 lead they would never relinquish. Catcher Salvador Perez extended the lead in the top of the 5th, sending a 3-1 slider from Strider 427 feet into the center-field stands for a solo home run that pushed the score to 3-1. The Royals added their final run in the top of the 7th, when outfielder MJ Melendez hit an RBI single off Braves reliever Raisel Iglesias to bring home Witt, who had reached base on a walk earlier in the inning. Strider, the 2025 NL Cy Young runner-up, finished his 6-inning start with 7 strikeouts but was charged with 3 earned runs on 6 hits and 2 walks, taking the loss for Atlanta. The Braves’ offense went completely cold after Albies’ 3rd-inning homer, notching only 1 additional hit for the rest of the game. They had a late chance to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th, when Royals closer Will Smith walked consecutive batters to load the bases with 2 outs, but Smith struck out Braves first baseman Matt Olson on a 97-mph fastball to seal the win for Kansas City. Post-game, Royals manager Matt Quatraro praised his team’s focus: “We knew coming in that facing the defending NL champs on their opening day was going to be a tough test, but our guys executed every part of their game plan tonight. Cole was unbelievable on the mound, and our hitters made Strider work for every out he got. This is a great way to start the season, but we’re just getting started.” Braves manager Brian Snitker downplayed the loss: “It’s one game out of 162. Our pitching was solid for the most part, we just couldn’t get the hits we needed when it counted. We’ll bounce back tomorrow, no doubt about it.”

Can’t believe we pulled this off on the road against the defending NL champs! Ragans looked like a legitimate Cy Young candidate out there, and Witt is already playing like he’s going to run away with the AL MVP this year. If our pitching stays this consistent and our offense keeps clicking like it did tonight, we’re definitely making a deep playoff run in 2026. What a way to start the season!

Tough loss to kick off the season, but I’m not panicking at all. Strider looked sharp for 90% of his start, our offense just went ice cold after that Albies homer. We had that golden opportunity in the 9th with the bases loaded, we just couldn’t come through with the big hit. This roster is too talented to stay this quiet at the plate for long, we’ll definitely take the next two games of the series to bounce back.

That was such a fun opening day game to watch! Ragans’ 7-inning masterclass was the clear highlight, and the Royals’ defense looked airtight all night. It’s so cool to see Kansas City’s years of rebuild finally paying off, they’re going to be a real threat to run away with the AL Central this year. Also, that 9th-inning strikeout of Olson was absolutely electric, what a perfect way to seal the win for the Royals.
