The Los Angeles Lakers held a closed-door internal meeting on Thursday to outline short-term operational adjustments after star guard Luka Dončić was diagnosed with a Grade 1 left calf strain that will keep him off the court for an estimated 2 to 3 weeks, per league insiders. The 7-time All-Star, who joined the Lakers via a blockbuster trade deadline deal last month, had posted 27.2 points, 9.1 assists and 8.3 rebounds per game across his first 12 appearances for the franchise, leading the team to an 8-4 record over that span and lifting them to the 6th spot in the Western Conference standings, which would grant them a guaranteed playoff spot without the need to compete in the play-in tournament.
Head coach Darvin Ham told reporters after the meeting that the team’s core priority during Dončić’s absence is to preserve their playoff positioning while avoiding overloading veteran core players LeBron James and Anthony Davis with excessive minutes. Ham confirmed that the coaching staff will roll out a restructured offensive system: Austin Reaves will take on primary ball-handling duties for the starting lineup, while D’Angelo Russell will move into a high-usage sixth man role leading the second unit’s offense. James, who has averaged 24.8 points and 7.6 assists per game this season, will also take on additional playmaking responsibilities during crunch time, while Davis will see a 15% increase in post-up touches and pick-and-roll finishes to exploit mismatches against smaller opposing lineups.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka emphasized that the franchise has no plans to rush Dončić’s return even if their standings slip slightly in the coming weeks. "We acquired Luka to build a long-term championship contender, not just to win a handful of regular season games," Pelinka said in a press briefing. "We have full confidence in the depth of our roster to hold down the fort until he is 100% healthy, and the adjustments we have outlined will let us maintain our competitive rhythm without putting unnecessary stress on our core group."
The Lakers are scheduled to play 8 games over the next 3 weeks, including matchups against fellow Western Conference playoff contenders the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks. Players also discussed during the meeting the need for role players including Rui Hachimura, Cam Reddish and Jaxson Hayes to step up on both ends of the floor, particularly on perimeter defense to offset Dončić’s absence on that side of the ball.

This is such brutal timing, we were finally building real chemistry between Luka, Bron and AD after the trade. I’m just glad we’re not rushing him back, a first-round exit this year is way better than risking a long-term injury that ruins our championship chances next season.
I actually think we might perform better than expected during this stretch. Reaves has proven he can run an offense when given the chance, and if Russell can hit his open 3s consistently off the bench, we could even pick up a couple of upset wins against the Nuggets and Suns.
It’s hard not to feel for the Lakers front office right now, they gave up so much draft capital and young talent to get Luka, and now he’s sidelined right when they need to lock in their playoff spot. If they drop into the play-in tournament and get eliminated early, that trade will look a lot worse by the end of the season.
I’m just glad Darvin Ham is finally putting Reaves in the primary playmaker role he’s earned. He’s way more reliable as a decision-maker than Russell, and this stretch will give us a good chance to test what that lineup can do long-term when Luka is back.
