Stan Wawrinka Expresses Gratitude to 'Carlitos' Following Joint Training Session Ahead of Potential Monte-Carlo Masters Clash

Key keywords: Stan Wawrinka, Carlos Alcaraz, Carlitos, Monte-Carlo Masters, ATP 1000, men's professional tennis, pre-tournament training session, potential Monte-Carlo clash, red clay tennis, Grand Slam champions First reported on Wawrinka’s official Instagram account on April 8, 2024, the three-time Grand Slam champion shared a series of candid photos from his joint training session with 20-year-old Spanish tennis prodigy Carlos Alcaraz, affectionately nicknamed “Carlitos” by fans and peers alike, ahead of the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters, the first ATP 1000 red clay event of the European season. The caption of Wawrinka’s post read, “Great practice today with Carlitos. Thank you for the hit, you are such an amazing talent. Good luck for the tournament… except if we play each other, of course,” drawing immediate attention from tennis fans worldwide who have been anticipating a potential on-court meeting between the two players after the tournament’s official draw placed them in the same quarter of the bracket, set to face off in the third round if both win their opening two matches. Wawrinka, who lifted the Monte-Carlo Masters trophy in 2014 and boasts a career record of 12 clay court titles, is widely regarded as one of the most formidable clay court players of his generation, despite being 38 years old and recovering from a series of career-threatening knee injuries over the past five years. Alcaraz, by contrast, is the current world No. 2 and a two-time Grand Slam champion, including a 2023 French Open title that cemented his status as the best young clay court player on the ATP tour. The two-hour training session, held on the outer red clay courts of the Monte-Carlo Country Club, saw both players test their full range of shots, with Wawrinka’s iconic one-handed backhand going head-to-head with Alcaraz’s explosive forehand, drawing cheers from a small crowd of fans and coaches who gathered to watch the unannounced practice. Tennis analysts have noted that the joint training session benefits both players: Wawrinka gains the chance to practice against the high-tempo, aggressive playing style that defines the new generation of ATP players, while Alcaraz can pick up tactical tips from a veteran who has beaten all of the “Big Three” (Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer) in Grand Slam finals. Tournament organizers have also highlighted the potential third-round clash as one of the most anticipated early matches of the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters, especially with 11-time champion Rafael Nadal withdrawing from the event due to ongoing fitness concerns. As of press time, Wawrinka’s Instagram post has racked up over 1.2 million likes and 40,000 comments, with fans from across the world sharing their excitement for the possible matchup.

@tennisfan92: As a long-time Wawrinka fan, I’m so excited to see him still going strong and sharing the court with the next generation. That third round match between him and Carlitos would be must-watch TV, I already have my alarm set for it if it happens!

@claycourtchronicles: I love how respectful both players are to each other. Wawrinka has nothing to prove at this point in his career, but he’s still putting in the work to compete with the best, and Alcaraz is humble enough to learn from a legend instead of acting like he’s already on top. This is what tennis is all about.

@spanishtennis4ever: Carlitos’ work ethic is unmatched, honestly. He could easily rest ahead of the first round but he’s out here practicing with one of the greatest clay court players of all time to sharpen his game. I’m rooting for him to win the whole tournament, but if he loses to Wawrinka I won’t even be mad, that would be an all-time classic match.

@backhandenthusiast: That joke in Wawrinka’s caption had me dying! He’s always had such a great sense of humor. I really hope they do play each other, I want to see Stan’s single-handed backhand against Alcaraz’s forehand on red clay, that’s the kind of matchup we don’t get enough of these days.
