State Of Decay 3 Trailer Labeled 'Basically Fake' As Developers Confirm Zombie Deer Feature Won't Be Available At Launch

Back in 2020, Xbox’s first reveal trailer for State Of Decay 3 sent the franchise’s massive fanbase into a frenzy, with its haunting shot of a frost-covered, emaciated zombie deer wandering a snowy woodland before turning to face the camera becoming the most iconic and widely discussed moment of the entire showcase. For years, fans have held that moment as a core promise of what the long-awaited third entry would deliver: a massive expansion of the series’ signature post-apocalyptic ecosystem, moving beyond just human zombies to include infected wildlife that would add entirely new layers of tension, exploration, and survival challenge to the open-world formula.
That long-held hope was completely dashed this week, however, after a lead developer at Undead Labs, the studio behind the State Of Decay franchise, shared a candid development update on the official State Of Decay community Discord server. When asked directly about the status of the zombie deer and other undead wildlife teased in the 2020 reveal, the developer confirmed that not only will no infected animal features be included in the game’s launch version, but there is currently no timeline for adding them post-launch either. The developer went on to explain that the 2020 trailer was always intended as a “tone piece” to demonstrate the game’s darker, more atmospheric vision for the post-apocalypse, and that none of the visuals shown in that initial reveal were ever guaranteed to make it to the final product.
The announcement has sparked widespread outrage across the game’s fan community, with many players now labeling the original 2020 trailer “basically fake” and accusing both Undead Labs and Xbox of intentional marketing deception. Longtime fans of the series note that the zombie deer was the single most cited feature in community discussions about State Of Decay 3 over the past three years, with many holding off on purchasing other survival games specifically to wait for the title’s innovative undead wildlife system. Critics have also pointed out that this is far from the first time Xbox has faced backlash over misleading concept trailers, citing the 2020 Halo Infinite reveal that featured drastically higher graphical quality than the version that launched a year later, as well as several unfulfilled feature teases for other first-party Xbox titles. As of press time, neither Undead Labs nor Xbox have issued an official statement addressing the fan backlash, though many players are now calling for the studio to push back the game’s release to include the promised undead wildlife features, or at minimum adjust their marketing materials to remove the zombie deer footage from all future promotional clips.

I’ve been hyped for State Of Decay 3 ever since that first trailer dropped, and the zombie deer was literally the only thing that made it stand out from every other generic zombie survival game on the market. How do you lead your entire reveal with a feature you never even planned to include at launch? That’s textbook bait and switch, and I’m definitely skipping pre-orders now.
I get that concept trailers aren’t 1:1 representations of the final game, but Undead Labs had three whole years to tell us zombie deer weren’t going to be a launch feature. Waiting until we’re a few months out from release to break this news is so scummy, they clearly just wanted to keep hype up as long as possible even if it meant lying to their fanbase.
This is such a letdown. The whole appeal of State Of Decay for me is the dynamic, lived-in apocalypse where you have to adapt to unexpected threats. Zombie deer and other infected animals would have made the world feel so much more dangerous and immersive, now it just sounds like it’s going to be the same exact game as State Of Decay 2 with slightly better graphics. Hard pass for me unless they add this feature down the line.
