Dune: Part Three Tickets Go On Sale For Exclusive Early IMAX 70mm Screenings

Key keywords: Dune: Part Three, IMAX 70mm screenings, early ticket sales, Denis Villeneuve, Frank Herbert sci-fi adaptation, limited theatrical release, Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Entertainment, sci-fi epic, 70mm film projection. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment officially announced on Tuesday that advance tickets for exclusive early IMAX 70mm screenings of Dune: Part Three are now available for purchase across 12 global markets, one full week ahead of the film’s wide worldwide theatrical release on December 20, 2024. The highly anticipated final installment of Denis Villeneuve’s critically acclaimed Dune trilogy was shot almost entirely on 65mm IMAX film, making the 70mm large-format projection the only viewing experience that matches the director’s original creative vision, delivering 10 times the resolution of standard digital projections, a 26% wider aspect ratio for exclusive frame content, and immersive analog sound that captures every detail of Hans Zimmer’s award-winning score. The early IMAX 70mm screenings will be held at 147 certified IMAX 70mm locations globally, including 82 sites in North America covering major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Chicago, 38 sites across Europe in London, Paris, Berlin, and Madrid, and 27 sites in Asia-Pacific markets including Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney, and Singapore. Each early screening will also include an exclusive 10-minute pre-recorded introduction from Villeneuve, as well as a 15-minute behind-the-scenes documentary focused on the film’s on-location shooting in the Jordanian Wadi Rum desert that will not be available in wide release or on home media. Industry data shows that IMAX screenings contributed 22% of Dune: Part Two’s $718 million global box office in 2023, with IMAX 70mm tickets selling out within 3 hours of going on sale in most markets, leading to resale prices as high as 15 times face value on secondary platforms. To curb scalping, ticket purchases for the early Dune: Part Three 70mm screenings are limited to 4 tickets per customer, with ID checks required at entry for all attendees. Villeneuve shared in a press statement that “The IMAX 70mm format is how Dune was meant to be seen. The texture of the film, the scale of the sandworm sequences, the depth of the desert landscapes – all of these elements are designed to be experienced on the largest possible analog screen, and we wanted to give the most dedicated fans a chance to see the film first in the best possible format.” Ticketing platforms reported that over 60% of available early screening tickets were sold within the first 2 hours of going on sale, with remaining tickets expected to sell out by the end of the day on Wednesday. Fans can check the official IMAX website to find participating locations and purchase remaining tickets.

Just refreshed the IMAX ticket page 17 times in 5 minutes and finally scored 2 tickets for the LA screening! I’ve been re-watching Dune 1 and 2 on 4K Blu-ray every weekend for the past 3 months prepping for this, and there’s literally no other way to watch Villeneuve’s masterpiece than 70mm IMAX. Worth every single penny even if I had to skip my rent payment this month lmao

As someone who’s collected 70mm film prints for 12 years, I can’t stress enough how different this experience is from regular digital IMAX. The grain, the color depth, the scale of the desert sequences on a 7-story tall screen? Digital can never replicate that warm, immersive texture only film can offer. Already booked my ticket for the NYC showing and plan to camp outside the theater 2 hours early to get the perfect center seat.

Super disappointed that there are zero early 70mm IMAX screenings in my small Midwestern city. I already booked a 4-hour bus ticket to Chicago just to catch one of the showings there. It’s a little ridiculous how limited these 70mm screens are, but Villeneuve’s work deserves the extra effort. I just hope they add more showtimes if the first batch sells out as fast as expected.
