FX and series creator Ryan Murphy officially confirmed the long-rumored return of the fan-favorite Coven witch coven for the 13th installment of the American Horror Story franchise on Wednesday, alongside the highly anticipated first look at iconic AHS alum Jessica Lange’s new role in the upcoming season, set to premiere on FX and Hulu in fall 2024.
First released in 2013, AHS Season 3: Coven remains one of the most critically and commercially successful entries in the anthology horror series, following a group of young witches training at Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies in New Orleans. Jessica Lange led the Coven cast as Fiona Goode, the ruthless Supreme Witch of the coven, a role that earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie and cemented her status as a core face of the AHS franchise.
Murphy revealed in the official announcement that Season 13 will pick up 11 years after the events of the original Coven arc, as the remaining members of the New Orleans coven are forced to reunite when an ancient, cross-continental dark force begins targeting magic users across the globe, threatening to wipe out witchkind entirely. The newly released first look photo shows Lange wearing a floor-length black velvet gown embroidered with silver occult symbols, her signature silver hair styled in loose waves, holding a gnarled wooden wand topped with raw obsidian as she stands in the overgrown front yard of the now-abandoned Miss Robichaux’s Academy. Murphy clarified that Lange will not reprise her role as Fiona Goode, who died at the end of Season 3, but will play a reclusive elder witch from the Goode bloodline who left the coven decades ago to hide from supernatural threats, and is called out of retirement to lead the surviving witches through the existential crisis.
Multiple original Coven cast members are confirmed to return alongside Lange, including Sarah Paulson as Cordelia Goode, Emma Roberts as Madison Montgomery, Taissa Farmiga as Zoe Benson, and Gabourey Sidibe as Queenie. After years of fan lobbying for a full Coven continuation following limited crossover appearances in Season 8: Apocalypse, Murphy noted that Season 13 will resolve long-unanswered plot threads, including the fate of the coven after Cordelia’s ascension to Supreme, the origins of the Goode family’s magical bloodline, and the hidden history of North American witchcraft outside the New Orleans coven. The first full trailer for AHS Season 13 is set to drop in July 2024, with early test screenings of the first three episodes already earning overwhelmingly positive feedback for its dark, atmospheric tone aligned with the original Coven’s vibe and Lange’s magnetic performance.

OH MY GOD I’ve been begging for a proper Coven sequel for 10 years! Jessica Lange looks so iconic in that first look shot, I can already tell her new character is going to be even more memorable than Fiona Goode. I’m already counting down the days to the fall premiere!
As someone who rewatches Coven at least once a year, I’m so relieved they’re not bringing Fiona back from the dead - that would have completely ruined her perfect character arc. The premise of the coven fighting a global threat to all witches sounds way more cohesive than the messy Apocalypse crossover, I have really high hopes for this season.
I only started watching AHS last year and Coven is by far my favorite season by a mile. I didn’t even know who Jessica Lange was before I watched it, but her performance as Fiona blew me away, so I’m beyond excited to see her back in this universe. I just hope they give all the original Coven cast enough screen time instead of sidelining them for random new characters.
The first look gave me actual chills! I love that they’re going back to the dark, campy, witchy vibe that made Coven so iconic instead of the weirdly convoluted plots we got in the last few AHS seasons. If they stick the landing, this could easily be the best AHS season in a decade.
