The University of Virginia Department of Athletics officially announced the appointment of Aaron Roussell as the new head coach of the Cavaliers women’s basketball program on Wednesday, ending a months-long search for a leader to rebuild one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s most storied women’s hoops programs.
Roussell arrives in Charlottesville after 12 highly successful seasons as the head coach at the University of Richmond, where he compiled a 221-127 overall record, led the Spiders to three NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament appearances, and claimed back-to-back Atlantic 10 regular season titles in 2023 and 2024. His tenure at Richmond transformed the program from a mid-table also-ran into a consistent postseason contender, with a reputation for stifling defensive play, efficient fast-break offense, and a student-athlete development model that prioritized both on-court success and academic achievement.
UVA athletic director Carla Williams highlighted Roussell’s proven track record of sustainable winning as the core factor behind the hire. “Aaron has built a culture of excellence everywhere he has coached, and he has demonstrated time and again that he can develop talent, connect with his players, and compete at the highest levels of college basketball,” Williams said in a press statement. “He understands the legacy of Virginia women’s basketball, which includes three ACC titles, three Final Four appearances, and a long line of trailblazing student-athletes, and we are confident he is the right person to return this program to national prominence.”
Roussell replaces Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Tina Thompson, who stepped down in March after five seasons at the helm, during which the Cavaliers posted a 30-88 record against ACC competition and failed to qualify for a single NCAA Tournament. In his introductory press conference, Roussell outlined his immediate priorities for the program, including retaining the Cavaliers’ current core of talented returning players, expanding the program’s recruiting footprint to target top high school prospects across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, and implementing his signature defensive system to make Virginia one of the toughest teams to score against in the ACC.
Industry analysts have widely praised the hire as a low-risk, high-upside move for UVA, noting that Roussell’s track record of building a winning program with limited resources at Richmond suggests he will thrive with the enhanced recruiting budget, athletic facilities, and national exposure that comes with leading a Power 5 conference program. Roussell is set to begin his tenure immediately, with offseason team workouts and recruiting visits scheduled to start next week.

Finally! We’ve been waiting for a head coach with a proven track record of consistent winning for years. Roussell turned Richmond into a legitimate A-10 powerhouse, and I have zero doubt he’ll get us back to competing for ACC titles and deep NCAA Tournament runs in the next two to three years. I’m already buying my season tickets for next season!
This is such a smart hire by UVA athletics. Roussell’s defensive scheme is elite, and his ability to develop underrated recruits into impact, all-conference level players is exactly what this program has been missing for the last decade. The ACC is one of the toughest conferences in women’s hoops, but he has the coaching acumen to build a sustainable winner here, not just a one-off flash in the pan.
As a Richmond women’s basketball fan, I’m heartbroken to see Aaron leave, but this opportunity is so well deserved. He took our program from an afterthought that barely drew 500 fans a game to a regular March Madness contender that sells out our arena every home game. We’ll forever be grateful for the 12 amazing years he gave us, and I’ll be rooting for him at UVA every single game except when the Cavaliers play the Spiders.
As a current sophomore on the UVA women’s basketball team, I’m so excited to get to work with Coach Roussell. We’ve all watched his teams at Richmond compete so hard and play for each other, and we love that he prioritizes his players’ well-being off the court just as much as their performance on it. We’re already planning extra offseason workouts to make sure we’re ready to exceed expectations next year.
