Martin spent the past three seasons at Arkansas under head coach Eric Musselman, where he established a reputation as one of the top recruiters and player development specialists in the Southeastern Conference. During his tenure with the Razorbacks, he led recruitment efforts for 12 top-100 national recruits, including five-star guard Anthony Black, who was selected 6th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, and helped develop Arkansas’ backcourt units that ranked top 15 nationally in steal percentage and 3-point defense in two of his three seasons with the program. Prior to his time at Arkansas, Martin held assistant coaching roles at Oregon, South Carolina, and Marquette, plus a seven-year stint in the NBA as a player development coach and assistant with the Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder. Malone, who led the Denver Nuggets to the 2023 NBA Championship, was named UNC’s head coach last month following the departure of Hubert Davis, and has publicly stated that building a staff with mixed college and professional experience was his top priority ahead of the 2024-2025 season. “Chuck is the perfect fit for this staff because he knows my system inside out from our time in Denver, and he has the recruiting connections and college basketball expertise that I need to build a sustainable winner at UNC,” Malone said in a statement released by the university’s athletic department. “He has a proven track record of identifying and developing talent that fits both our on-court identity and the culture we want to build here, and I couldn’t be more excited to bring him on board.” Martin will officially take over his new role on May 1, and will immediately lead UNC’s efforts to wrap up its 2024 recruiting class, which currently ranks 8th nationally, as well as lead outreach to top 2025 recruits across the Southeast. He will also oversee the program’s guard development program, working closely with returning UNC guards RJ Davis and Elliot Cadeau ahead of summer practice sessions. Musselman issued a statement thanking Martin for his contributions to the Razorbacks program, noting that “Chuck played an instrumental role in our success over the past three years, and we are grateful for everything he brought to our program. This is a well-deserved opportunity for him, and we wish him nothing but the best at UNC.”

@TarHeelHoopsFan23: This is such a huge win for UNC! Chuck Martin’s track record of developing elite guards and landing top recruits in the Southeast is exactly what we needed to get back to competing for national titles. Malone is already making all the right moves less than a month into his tenure.

@CollegeHoopsInsider: Martin and Malone’s prior working relationship in the NBA is going to make this staff click so much faster than people expect. Martin knows exactly what Malone expects on both ends of the floor, and he’s got the college recruiting connections Malone lacks after 18 years in the pros. UNC is going to be a force in 2024-25 already.

@RazorbackHoopsLover: Hate to see Chuck leave, but you can’t blame him for taking a job at a blue blood like UNC alongside a coach he’s already worked with. He did wonders for our backcourt the last three years and helped us land three five-star recruits. We wish him nothing but the best.

@NCAAHoopsWatcher: This hire signals that UNC is serious about blending NBA-level tactical development with elite college recruiting. Martin’s experience bridging both the college and pro ranks will be a huge selling point for recruits who want to play in the NBA someday. Smart move all around.
