Netflix and Shondaland officially announced Wednesday that three high-profile actors have joined the cast of Bridgerton Season 5, introducing fresh faces to the glamorous, gossip-fueled social circle known as the Ton ahead of the series’ highly anticipated 2025 premiere. The three new cast members are Mia Threapleton, Archie Renaux, and Susan Wokoma, each set to play pivotal original characters woven into the season’s central narrative centered on Gregory Bridgerton, the youngest Bridgerton son, and his quest for true love.
Threapleton will portray Lady Genevieve Pembroke, a quick-witted 26-year-old widowed aristocrat who relocates to London from her family’s estate in rural Ireland following the death of her husband. Described as “sharp, unapologetic, and harboring a secret that could upend the Ton’s most closely guarded hierarchies,” Lady Genevieve quickly forms an unlikely friendship with Penelope Featherington Bridgerton, as both women navigate the pressure of maintaining public reputations while hiding parts of their pasts. Renaux steps into the role of Lord Hugo Argyll, a rebellious Scottish duke who arrives in London to settle a long-running property dispute with the Bridgerton family. Charismatic, fiercely independent, and dismissive of London’s rigid social rules, Lord Hugo becomes a fan-favorite among the Ton’s unmarried young women, while also clashing repeatedly with Colin Bridgerton over conflicting business interests. Wokoma will play Lady Agatha Scott, a distant cousin of the British royal family and a vocal advocate for women’s access to higher education and professional opportunities. A long-time pen pal of Eloise Bridgerton, Lady Agatha’s arrival in London gives Eloise the support system she needs to launch her own activist efforts, even as the pair face backlash from conservative members of the Ton.
Shondaland head of casting Linda Lowy released a statement praising the three new additions, noting that their casting aligns with the franchise’s longstanding commitment to diverse, inclusive storytelling that reimagines Regency-era London as a vibrant, multifaceted world. Production on Season 5 is currently underway at multiple locations across the U.K., including the series’ iconic filming sites in Bath and Yorkshire, with early teasers set to drop for fans in late 2024. The announcement of the new cast members garnered more than 220 million impressions on X (formerly Twitter) within 24 hours of being released, making it one of the most talked-about streaming news events of the year so far.

OMGGGG I’ve been waiting for Gregory’s season forever! Mia Threapleton as Lady Genevieve? She’s such a talented actress, I can already tell she’s gonna be the most talked-about new member of the Ton this season. Also can we talk about Susan Wokoma? Her character as a women’s rights advocate is perfect for Eloise’s arc, I need their scenes together ASAP!
As someone who’s covered the Bridgerton franchise for 4 years, this casting slate is really smart. Shondaland is clearly leaning into expanding the Ton’s world beyond the core Bridgerton and Featherington families, and adding characters with diverse backstories from Scotland, Ireland and Black British aristocracy makes the Regency universe feel so much more lived-in. Can’t wait to see how Lord Hugo’s dynamic with the existing male leads plays out.
I’ve read all the Julia Quinn books 10+ times, and I love that the show is adding original characters that fit perfectly into the canon without derailing Gregory’s main love story with Lucy. The new characters all have such interesting hooks, I’m especially curious about Lady Genevieve’s secret past that the press release teases. This just made my 2024, count me down for the 2025 premiere!
Okay but the fact that Lord Hugo is a Scottish duke who clashes with Colin? I’m already ready for the enemies-to-lovers fanfics about him and one of the Bridgerton cousins. Shondaland knows exactly what we want, these new cast picks are 10/10 no notes.
