Game Recap: Denver Nuggets Roll Past Oklahoma City Thunder 127-107 Behind Jokic Triple-Double and Murray’s 32 Points

Key keywords: Nuggets vs Thunder 2024 Game Recap, Nikola Jokic Triple-Double, Denver Nuggets Regular Season Win, Oklahoma City Thunder Loss, 2024 NBA Regular Season Highlights, Jamal Murray 30+ Point Game, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Underperformance, Chet Holmgren Rookie Season Performance The highly anticipated Western Conference showdown between the defending champion Denver Nuggets and the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder delivered a lopsided result for OKC, as Denver cruised to a dominant 127-107 victory at Ball Arena on Sunday night. From the opening tip, the Nuggets set the tone with their signature championship-caliber ball movement and efficient shooting. Nikola Jokic, the two-time league MVP, got off to a scorching start, posting 8 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the first quarter alone, while backcourt partner Jamal Murray poured in 11 first-quarter points to push Denver to an early 38-22 lead after 12 minutes of play. The Thunder, who came into the game holding the best record in the Western Conference, looked uncharacteristically flat in the opening frame: leading scorer Shai Gilgeous-Alexander missed 5 of his first 6 shot attempts and committed 2 turnovers, while the team shot just 32% from the field and missed all 6 of their three-point attempts. Oklahoma City showed brief signs of life in the second quarter, as rookie big man Chet Holmgren scored 8 quick points and Jalen Williams added 7 points to cut the deficit to as low as 10 points halfway through the period. However, the Nuggets responded immediately, with Aaron Gordon throwing down two highlight-reel dunks and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope knocking down back-to-back threes to extend Denver’s lead to 17 points at halftime, 70-53. The third quarter put the game out of reach, as Jokic notched his 139th career triple-double just 6 minutes into the second half, finishing the quarter with 7 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists to put the Nuggets up by 23 points heading into the final frame. Murray finished the night with a game-high 32 points on 12-of-18 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, to go along with 5 assists. Jokic ended his night with 17 points, 13 rebounds, 14 assists and just 1 turnover in only 32 minutes of play, while Gordon chipped in 21 points and 8 rebounds. For the Thunder, Gilgeous-Alexander finished with a season-low 20 points on 7-of-19 shooting, well below his season average of 31.1 points per game. Holmgren posted 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Williams added 17 points, but the team shot just 28% from three-point range as a unit, compared to 45% from deep for the Nuggets. The win cuts Oklahoma City’s lead over Denver in the Western Conference standings to just 1 game, with both teams having 8 games left in the regular season. Many analysts already predict the two teams will face off in the Western Conference Finals, with this game serving as a clear reminder of the Nuggets’ edge in playoff experience over the young Thunder core.

Jokic is just unreal, he barely broke a sweat and dropped a triple-double while completely controlling the pace of the game. I can’t wait to see these two teams match up in the Western Conference Finals, that series is gonna be an all-time war.

As a lifelong Thunder fan, this was a really rough wake-up call. Our young guys looked completely overwhelmed by the Nuggets’ championship experience. SGA had a rare off night, but we can’t rely on him to carry us every single game—our role players need to step up and hit those open threes if we want to compete for a title this year.

Everyone was sleeping on the Nuggets repeating as champions this whole season, but this game is the perfect reminder of how dangerous they are when they’re locked in. Jokic is the clear best player in the league, and Murray is playing like the elite postseason guard we all know he is. The West playoff race is about to be insane.

Can we talk about how underrated Aaron Gordon’s performance was? He held Chet Holmgren to just 6 points in the second half and shut down the Thunder’s entire interior attack. The Nuggets’ role players show up every single night, that’s exactly why they’re still the team to beat in the West.
