Sacramento I-5 High-Speed Chase And Officer-Involved Shooting Leaves Carjacking Suspect Dead, No Civilians Harmed

Key keywords: Sacramento I-5 chase, carjacking suspect fatally shot, California Highway Patrol incident, Sacramento County law enforcement, stolen vehicle pursuit, I-5 northbound Sacramento closure, 2024 Sacramento carjacking, officer-involved shooting investigation On Wednesday afternoon, a violent carjacking incident in downtown Sacramento escalated into a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 5 that ended in an officer-involved shooting, leaving the male carjacking suspect dead with no reported injuries to civilians or law enforcement officers, according to official statements from the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The incident began shortly before 1:30 p.m., when Sacramento Police Department received a 911 call from a civilian who reported being forcibly carjacked at gunpoint outside a grocery store on J Street. The suspect, whose identity has not been released pending next-of-kin notification, stole the victim’s gray 2021 Toyota Camry and fled the scene northbound. A CHP patrol unit spotted the stolen vehicle approximately 10 minutes later merging onto northbound I-5 near the Q Street onramp, and initiated a traffic stop. The suspect refused to pull over, leading officers on a 12-minute high-speed chase that reached speeds of up to 110 miles per hour. During the pursuit, the suspect repeatedly weaved in and out of traffic, drove on the shoulder for more than half a mile, and collided with three civilian vehicles, causing minor property damage but no severe injuries to the drivers of those cars. The pursuit came to an end near the Garden Highway offramp, when the suspect lost control of the stolen Camry and crashed into a concrete median barrier. After the crash, the suspect exited the vehicle brandishing a loaded semi-automatic handgun and pointed it directly at the two CHP officers who had exited their patrol units to approach the scene. Both officers fired their service weapons, striking the suspect multiple times. Emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the scene immediately, but the suspect was pronounced dead at approximately 2:02 p.m. Northbound lanes of I-5 between Garden Highway and Del Paso Road were closed for nearly four hours as investigators processed the shooting scene, collected evidence including dash cam and body camera footage, and interviewed witnesses. The CHP’s Special Investigations Unit has taken over the probe into the officer-involved shooting, per standard protocol, and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will conduct a separate review to determine if the use of lethal force was consistent with state law and department policy. The victim of the initial carjacking, a 38-year-old Sacramento resident, was unharmed in the incident and has already provided a full statement to law enforcement. Officials noted that the suspect had an outstanding felony warrant for assault with a deadly weapon at the time of the carjacking, though further details about his criminal history have not been made public as of Thursday morning.

I was stuck in the I-5 backup for almost 3 hours yesterday and had no idea how dangerous the situation was. I’m so grateful no innocent drivers or police officers got hurt — that suspect was putting everyone on the road at risk with how he was driving, and pulling a gun on cops was the worst possible choice he could have made. Counting my blessings today.

The CHP did exactly what they were supposed to do to protect the public here. This guy already committed a violent armed carjacking, put dozens of people in danger during the chase, and threatened officers with a loaded weapon. Lethal force was completely justified, and I’m glad they didn’t hesitate to keep the rest of us safe.

I hope the full body camera footage from both officers is released to the public as soon as the initial investigation wraps up. Even when the suspect was clearly in the wrong, transparency around officer-involved shootings is the only way we can maintain trust between local law enforcement and the Sacramento community. We deserve to see exactly what happened that led to this outcome.
