The Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball program officially announced the addition of 6-foot-8 forward Chisom Onuetu to its 2024-2025 roster on Wednesday, marking one of the most impactful late-season recruit signings in the program’s recent history. Onuetu, a four-star prospect from Chicago, Illinois, spent the past two seasons playing for the IMG Academy postgraduate program, where he averaged 17.2 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 1.8 assists per game during his final campaign, earning him a spot on the National Prep Basketball All-American Second Team.
Badgers head coach Greg Gard emphasized that Onuetu’s versatile skill set fills a critical gap in the team’s frontcourt rotation, which was exposed during the 2023-2024 Big Ten tournament, where the Badgers struggled to defend mobile forwards and secure second-chance points on offense. “Chisom brings a rare combination of size, athleticism and basketball IQ that fits perfectly with our program’s identity,” Gard said in a press release. “He can score in the post,, stretch the floor with his mid-range and three-point shooting, and defend multiple positions, which is absolutely critical for success in the Big Ten, one of the most physical conferences in college basketball. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the Badger family.”
Onuetu, who holds dual citizenship with the United States and Nigeria, had received offers from more than 15 high-major programs, including Illinois, Michigan State, Xavier and Marquette, before committing to Wisconsin. He cited the program’s culture of player development and winning tradition as key factors in his decision. “I’ve watched the Badgers for years, and I love how hard they play on every possession, and how Coach Gard develops young players to reach their full potential,” Onuetu said in a statement. “I can’t wait to get to Madison, meet my teammates, and help this team win Big Ten titles and compete in the NCAA tournament.”
The addition of Onuetu pushes the Badgers’ frontcourt depth to among the best in the Big Ten, with returning starters Tyler Wahl and Steven Crowley, plus reserve big man Carter Gilmore, now joined by the talented newcomer. College basketball analysts project that Wisconsin will now be a top-three pre-season pick in the Big Ten for the 2024-25 season, with a legitimate shot to reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament if the team’s guard play remains consistent throughout the year.

As a lifelong Badgers fan, this signing has me so hyped for next season! We really struggled with frontcourt depth last year, especially when Wahl was out with that ankle injury. Onuetu’s rim protection and rebounding ability are exactly what we need to compete for a Big Ten title, I can already see him making a huge impact as a freshman.
I’m a Big Ten basketball analyst with over a decade of covering the conference, and this is easily one of the best under-the-radar signings of the off-season. Onuetu’s ability to stretch the floor and defend positions 3 through 5 will make the Badgers’ frontcourt extremely hard to match up against. If their guards stay healthy, they’re a legitimate Final Four contender in my book.
As a Michigan State fan, I’m low-key frustrated we missed out on signing Onuetu. He was one of our top recruit targets, and now he’s going to be a thorn in our side for the next three years. Credit to Wisconsin for landing such a talented prospect, though. He’s going to make them a way tougher team to beat next season.
