The college basketball world was set ablaze on Wednesday as 5-star forward Alex Wilkins announced his commitment to the Kentucky Wildcats Basketball program, giving head coach John Calipari the crown jewel of his 2025 recruiting class and instantly elevating the Wildcats’ status as a national title contender for the 2025-26 season.
Ranked as the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2025 class by ESPN and the No. 1 power forward in the country, Wilkins chose Kentucky over a final list of suitors including Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, and his home state program Indiana. The 6-foot-9, 220-pound prospect made the announcement during a live ceremony at his high school in Indianapolis, pulling on a custom Kentucky blue hat to cheers from friends, family, and fans in attendance.
“Kentucky just felt like home from the second I stepped on campus,” Wilkins said in his post-announcement press conference. “Coach Cal has a proven track record of developing players like me into NBA-ready talent, and I want to be part of the legacy of winning that Kentucky has built over the years. I’m ready to come in, work hard, and help bring a national championship back to Lexington.”
Wilkins’ elite skill set makes him a perfect fit for Calipari’s up-tempo, positionless system. He averaged 21.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game during his junior high school season, while shooting 42% from 3-point range on the Nike EYBL AAU circuit over the summer. His ability to defend four positions, stretch the floor, and create offense for himself and teammates fills a critical gap for the Wildcats, who struggled with consistent forward production during the 2023-24 season.
Prior to Wilkins’ commitment, Kentucky’s 2025 recruiting class ranked 12th nationally, with three four-star prospects already locked in. With the addition of Wilkins, the class now jumps to No. 2 in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings, trailing only Duke. Calipari praised Wilkins during a post-announcement interview, noting that the young forward’s work ethic and team-first mindset set him apart from other top prospects in the cycle.
“Alex is the kind of player that makes everyone around him better,” Calipari said. “He’s got the talent to be a one-and-done lottery pick, but he’s also focused on winning, which is exactly what we look for here at Kentucky. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the Big Blue Nation.”
The commitment also sends shockwaves through the SEC, where programs like Alabama, Tennessee, and Auburn have been gaining ground on Kentucky in recent years. With Wilkins leading the 2025 roster, the Wildcats are now the clear pre-season favorite to win the SEC title and make a deep run in the 2026 NCAA Tournament.

Wow, this is the biggest win for Big Blue Nation in years! As a lifelong Kentucky fan, I’ve been begging for a versatile forward like Wilkins who can stretch the floor and lock down on defense. We’re definitely favorites for the national title in 2026 now, no question about it.
As an NBA scout who’s followed Wilkins since his sophomore year, Kentucky is the perfect landing spot for him. Calipari’s system will let him play through multiple positions and showcase all his skills, and I fully expect him to be a top-5 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft if he lives up to his potential.
Ugh, as a Kansas fan I was so hopeful we’d land Wilkins, but you can’t fault his choice. Calipari’s track record with developing frontcourt talent is unmatched, and Kentucky’s NIL package was almost certainly better than anything we could offer. Looks like we’ll have to go through them in the tournament next year.
This commitment just shows how much pull Kentucky still has in the recruiting world, even with all the new NIL and transfer portal changes. Wilkins is a generational talent, and he’s going to fit right in with the legacy of great Wildcat forwards like Anthony Davis and Karl-Anthony Towns.
