The 2024 Seville ATP Challenger, a key warm-up event for the upcoming European clay court swing and Roland Garros, delivered a bittersweet result on Thursday as rising 21-year-old Spanish talent Carlos Jódar advanced to the quarterfinals following a mid-match retirement from top seed Jaume Munar, who suffered an apparent left knee injury early in the second set.
27-year-old Munar, currently ranked No. 82 in the ATP singles rankings, entered the matchup as the clear favorite. He came into the contest fresh off a deep run at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell earlier this month, where he pushed top-10 player Andrey Rublev to three sets in the round of 16, and had won 11 of his last 15 clay court matches leading into Seville. He took control of the first set against Jódar quickly, breaking the younger player’s serve twice to take the opener 6-3, and looked poised to close out the match in straight sets until the injury occurred. Leading 1-0 in the second set, Munar pulled up awkwardly after hitting a wide running forehand, immediately grabbing at his left knee and signaling to his team for support. Tournament medical staff administered a 10-minute on-court medical timeout, wrapping the knee and evaluating his range of motion, but Munar was unable to put full weight on the leg when he attempted to return to play. After hitting just two practice points, he shook his head and walked to the net to concede the match, handing Jódar a 3-6, 1-0 (ret.) victory.
For Jódar, the win marks his sixth consecutive victory across Challenger and ITF level events, extending a career-best run that has seen him climb 72 spots in the ATP rankings since the start of 2024, to his current career high of No. 219. Speaking to reporters after the match, Jódar expressed clear sympathy for his fellow Spanish competitor. “First of all, I wish Jaume a speedy recovery – he’s a great player and a guy I’ve looked up to for years, so it’s never nice to win a match this way,” Jódar said. “I was starting to find my rhythm in the end of the first set, adjusting to his spin and movement, and I was looking forward to a tough battle, but my focus now is on preparing for my quarterfinal match against Pedro Martínez, and keeping this momentum going as long as I can.”
Munar’s coaching team released a short statement after the match, confirming that the 27-year-old would undergo an MRI scan on Friday to determine the severity of the knee sprain, and that he would likely withdraw from next week’s Madrid Open qualifying draw as a precaution to avoid long-term damage ahead of the French Open in late May.

As a long-time Munar fan, this is such gutting news. He was playing the best tennis of his career this clay season, and I was really hoping he’d make a deep run at Roland Garros this year. Fingers crossed the MRI shows nothing serious and he’s back on court in a few weeks. — @tennisfan_es
People are sleeping on Jódar! I watched his first two matches in Seville and his forehand is absolutely lethal on clay. Even if Munar hadn’t gotten injured, I think Jódar had a real shot to come back and win that match in three sets. Excited to see how far he goes this tournament. — @claycourtking98
It’s so good to see young Spanish tennis talent stepping up right as the Big Three are winding down. Both Jódar and Munar are such hard workers, it’s just a shame one had to go out this way. All the best to Munar for recovery, and good luck to Jódar the rest of the week! — @martatenniscommentary
I’m really impressed by Jódar’s sportsmanship after the win, he didn’t even celebrate and immediately went to check on Munar after the retirement. That’s the kind of attitude that’s going to take him far in this sport. Can’t wait to see him on the main ATP tour full time next year. — @atpobserver
