Billy Bob Thornton Officially Launches 2026 Morro Rock Tour Alongside Upcoming New Studio Album

Key keywords: Billy Bob Thornton, 2026 Morro Rock Tour, new studio album, Americana rock, Morro Bay live concerts, independent music tour, California coastal live performances, The Boxmasters Award-winning actor and veteran Americana rock musician Billy Bob Thornton has officially announced his highly anticipated 2026 Morro Rock Tour, paired with the upcoming release of his first solo studio album in seven years, per an official statement shared via his social media channels and record label on Wednesday. The 28-date North American tour will kick off on April 12, 2026, at the iconic Morro Rock Amphitheater in Morro Bay, California, marking the first time a major headlining tour has launched exclusively from the scenic coastal venue in over a decade. Stops will span 17 U.S. states and 3 Canadian provinces, with scheduled performances at outdoor amphitheaters, historic independent theaters, and coastal festival stages through August 2026, before wrapping with a three-night homecoming stand at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. The yet-to-be-titled new album, set to drop on March 21, 2026, two weeks ahead of the tour launch, features 12 original tracks written entirely by Thornton, with production credits from Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb, known for his work with Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell. Thornton shared in the press release that the album draws heavily on his childhood spent growing up in rural Arkansas, as well as his decades of experience working in film and music across Los Angeles and Nashville, blending raw blues, outlaw country, and gritty indie rock sensibilities that have defined his musical career since his 2001 solo debut. Ticketing for the 2026 Morro Rock Tour will open for fan club presale on October 17, 2023, with general public sale launching October 21. VIP packages will include exclusive access to pre-show soundchecks, limited edition vinyl pressings of the new album, signed tour posters, and meet-and-greet opportunities with Thornton and his backing band, The Boxmasters, who will join him for all tour dates. Event organizers noted that a portion of all ticket sales will be donated to Morro Bay Coastkeeper, a local non-profit dedicated to protecting the Central California coastal ecosystem that inspired the tour’s name and thematic focus. Thornton also revealed that the opening night performance at Morro Rock Amphitheater will be filmed for a full-length concert documentary, set to be released via streaming platforms in late 2026 alongside a deluxe reissue of the new album with bonus live tracks. “I’ve been wanting to build a tour around the energy and beauty of the California coast for years, and Morro Rock has always felt like this perfect, underrated landmark that captures the grit and magic that I want this album and tour to represent,” Thornton said in the official announcement. “This record is the most personal work I’ve ever made, and getting to play these songs for fans in these intimate, beautiful venues next to the ocean, in small towns and big cities alike, is going to be the best experience of my musical career by far.”

I’ve been waiting for new music from Billy since his last Boxmasters record in 2019! I already signed up for the fan club presale so I can get tickets to the Morro Bay opening night – that venue is absolutely stunning, and seeing him play there next to the iconic rock formation is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime show. Can’t wait to hear the new tracks live!

As a Morro Bay local, I’m so excited that he’s choosing our small coastal town to launch this huge tour! The fact that a portion of ticket sales goes to Morro Bay Coastkeeper is such a thoughtful touch too – it’s amazing to see high-profile artists giving back to the communities they perform in. We’re already planning local pop-up markets and pre-show events to welcome all the fans traveling in for the opening weekend.

Collaborating with Dave Cobb on this new album is such a perfect match for Billy’s signature gritty, rootsy sound. I’ve been a fan of both his acting and his music for decades, and I love that he’s still pushing himself creatively this far into his career. The tour lineup of venues is also fantastic – no overpriced massive stadiums, just small and mid-sized spots where you can actually connect with the performance. I’m already marking my calendar for the Nashville Ryman stop!

As a long-time Americana music fan, this announcement made my whole week. Billy’s earlier solo records have been on constant rotation for me, and the Morro Rock tour route hits so many of my favorite small venues on the West Coast. I’m already planning a road trip up the coast to catch three shows in California, Oregon, and Washington next year.
