The Veteran, the Transfer, and Two Rookies Who Shined in 2024 Jersey College Football Scrimmage

Key keywords: Jersey scrimmage, college football preseason, veteran linebacker, transfer quarterback, rookie wide receiver, rookie cornerback, NCAA Big Ten football, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, spring football exhibition The 2024 Rutgers Scarlet Knights spring Jersey scrimmage, held this past Saturday at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey, delivered far more excitement than the average preseason exhibition, as four standout players captured the attention of 12,300 fans in attendance and college football analysts across the Big Ten conference. Leading the group is sixth-year veteran linebacker Jake Myers, who missed the entire 2023 season with a torn ACL. Myers looked fully recovered and sharper than ever on Saturday, notching 12 total tackles (3 for loss), one pass deflection, and a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown that brought the crowd to its feet in the third quarter. Head coach Greg Schiano noted after the game that Myers has served as the emotional core of the defense all off-season, and his performance on the field validated the work he put in during rehab. “Jake is the heart of this team,” Schiano told reporters. “When he makes a play like that pick-six, you can see the whole sideline lift up. That’s the kind of leadership you can’t teach, and it’s going to carry us through tough matchups this fall.” The highly anticipated transfer quarterback Kyle Harrison, who joined Rutgers from Ohio State this off-season after three years as a backup for the Buckeyes, put any concerns about his fit with the offense to rest. Harrison completed 17 of 22 pass attempts for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns, with zero interceptions, showing off impressive accuracy on deep routes and quick decision-making in the red zone. He repeatedly avoided pressure from the first-team defensive line, extending plays to create passing windows for his receiving corps. The two rookies who broke out during the scrimmage are both true freshmen who joined the program as five-star recruits in the 2024 recruiting class. Wide receiver Tyler Reed, a 6-foot-3 speedster from South Jersey, caught 4 passes for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a 47-yard deep ball from Harrison that beat two defensive backs for a score in the second quarter. On the other side of the ball, rookie cornerback Jordan Carter held senior starting wide receiver Chris Long to just 2 catches for 17 yards, while logging 2 pass breakups and one interception of his own against the second-team offense. The scrimmage marked the final public spring practice for the Scarlet Knights, who will spend the next four weeks evaluating position depth before releasing their initial pre-fall depth chart in early June. Early projections from college football outlets have already bumped Rutgers up 7 spots in pre-season Big Ten power rankings following the standout performances from the four players, with many analysts predicting the team will earn its first bowl game win in over a decade this coming season.

Watched this scrimmage in person with my kid, and Jake Myers’ pick-six was easily the highlight of the day. You can tell how much he loves this team, grinding back from that ACL tear to lead the defense like that. Total legend in the making for Rutgers.

Kyle Harrison is without a doubt the QB1 for this season, no debate needed. His chemistry with Tyler Reed on those deep routes was insane, that connection is going to give every Big Ten defensive coordinator nightmares this fall. Can’t wait to see them play against Michigan in October.

As a former Rutgers defensive back who graduated in 2020, I was blown away by Jordan Carter’s performance as a true freshman. Locking down a senior starting wide receiver for almost the entire scrimmage? That kid has elite level talent, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a first-round NFL draft pick in three years.

I’ve been a Rutgers fan for 20 years, and this is the most excited I’ve been for a season in ages. We finally have a competent QB, a veteran leader on defense, and two rookie playmakers who can actually make big plays. This might be the year we finally break out as a legitimate Big Ten contender.
