The 2024 NHL Western Conference First Round series between the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild wrapped up over the weekend with the Stars securing a 4-2 series win to advance to the second round, led by a career-best playoff stretch from their core group of young and veteran talent.
Leading the charge on the blue line is Finnish defenseman Miro Heiskanen, who anchored the Stars’ defense through all six games, averaging a team-high 27 minutes and 42 seconds of ice time per contest. Heiskanen finished the series with 2 goals and 5 assists, including three primary assists in the series-clinching Game 6, and led all skaters in blocked shots with 18, repeatedly shutting down the Wild’s top scoring line of Kirill Kaprizov, Mats Zuccarello and Joel Eriksson Ek. Head coach Peter DeBoer praised Heiskanen after Game 6, noting that “Miro is the backbone of this team, and he shows up every single night when we need him most.”
Up front, star winger Jason Robertson continued his dominant 2023-24 campaign, posting 3 goals and 4 assists across the series, including a two-goal third period comeback in Game 4 that erased a 2-0 Wild lead and paved the way for a Stars overtime win that gave them a 3-1 series lead. Robertson, who scored 47 goals in the regular season, also led all forwards in the series in takeaways with 12, disrupting Minnesota’s breakouts all series long.
21-year-old sophomore center Wyatt Johnston emerged as a surprise breakout star of the series, notching 4 goals and 2 assists, including the opening goal in Game 6 that set the tone for the Stars’ 4-1 clinching win. Johnston also posted a 56.2% faceoff win rate across the series, a 7.8% jump from his regular season mark, and established himself as a reliable two-way option for DeBoer in high-pressure situations.
With the series win, the Stars now advance to the Western Conference Semifinals, where they will face the defending conference champion Colorado Avalanche, led by star winger Mikko Rantanen, who recorded 5 goals and 6 assists in the Avalanche’s first-round sweep of the Winnipeg Jets. The Stars’ core group will face their toughest test of the postseason yet matching up with Rantanen and the Avalanche’s high-powered offense, as they look to keep their Stanley Cup run alive.

As a long-time Stars season ticket holder, I’m blown away by how this core stepped up when we needed them most. Johnston’s play this series was especially unbelievable for a 21-year-old, I can’t wait to see him go head-to-head with Rantanen next round!
Heiskanen is easily the most underrated two-way defenseman in the entire league right now. Playing almost 30 minutes a night, putting up 7 points, and shutting down Kaprizov for most of the series? He’s my early Conn Smythe pick for sure.
Gutted as a Wild fan, but there’s no denying the Stars were the better team this series. Robertson’s two goals in the third period of Game 4 completely killed our momentum, and we never recovered. Good luck to them against the Avs, they’re gonna need it with Rantanen playing like he is right now.
As an Avalanche fan, I loved watching the Stars’ play against the Wild, but people are sleeping on how hot Rantanen is right now. That Stars defense is good, but they haven’t faced an offense as deep as ours yet, this next series is gonna be a banger.
