The 2024 Jack Link's 500 at Talladega Superspeedway delivered all the chaotic action, last-second passes, and unpredictable leaderboard shifts that NASCAR fans expect from the iconic 2.66-mile tri-oval, with real-time updates rolling out nonstop across the 188-lap Cup Series contest. As the 10th event of the 2024 regular season, the weekend carried heavy playoff implications for drivers on the bubble of the 16-driver postseason field, making every position on the live leaderboard critical for long-term championship hopes.
Ryan Blaney, the 2023 Cup Series champion, started on pole after posting a qualifying lap of 181.9 mph on Saturday, and led the opening 21 laps before the first caution flag flew for a single-car spin in turn 3 by two-time Talladega winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The first stage ran relatively clean, with 12 lead changes among 7 different drivers, and ended with Chase Elliott claiming the stage win, followed by Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin in second and third.
The signature Talladega chaos erupted on lap 122, when a slight tap from Ty Gibbs to the rear of William Byron’s car sent Byron spinning into the pack, triggering a 12-car crash that collected playoff contenders including Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, and Brad Keselowski. No drivers sustained serious injuries in the wreck, though 8 of the 12 cars involved were forced to retire from the race. The live leaderboard shifted dramatically after the crash, with underdog drivers including Bubba Wallace, Ross Chastain, and Ty Gibbs moving into the top 5 for the final 60 laps.
The final 10 laps saw three separate lead changes, and a late caution for debris on the backstretch set up a green-white-checkered finish that had fans on their feet. On the final lap, Wallace held the lead coming out of turn 4, but Gibbs pulled to the inside line, getting a push from Logano to edge past Wallace by just 0.023 seconds at the finish line, claiming his second career Cup Series win and his first ever superspeedway victory. The final live leaderboard top 5 was rounded out by Logano in third, Chastain in fourth, and Corey LaJoie in fifth, his best finish of the 2024 season. With the win, Gibbs locked himself into the 2024 NASCAR playoff field, while Wallace’s second-place finish moved him up to 14th in the playoff standings, just 12 points above the cut line with six regular season races remaining. NASCAR officials confirmed after the race that the contest saw 37 lead changes among 15 different drivers, the most of any race so far this season.

That final lap finish had me screaming at my TV! I can’t believe Ty Gibbs pulled off that pass by such a tiny margin – Talladega never ever disappoints when it comes to last-second drama. Definitely worth sitting through the 3-hour rain delay earlier in the day to see that end.
I was at the track for the 12-car crash on lap 122 and it was terrifying to watch in person. So grateful all the drivers walked away okay, NASCAR’s safety improvements over the last 10 years are incredible. Congrats to Ty, that win was well-earned after he avoided all the big wrecks all day.
Bubba Wallace was so close to getting that win! He drove the perfect race all day, just didn’t have enough help on the final lap. That second-place finish is huge for his playoff hopes though, I really hope he can lock himself in in the next few races. Go 23XI!
The leaderboard was shifting every single lap for most of this race, I could barely keep up. As a casual NASCAR fan, this is exactly the kind of race that makes me want to tune in every week. Can’t wait to see how the playoff standings shake out for the rest of the regular season!
