The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) has published its first official boys volleyball power rankings of the 2024 spring season, marking the first formal checkpoint for 102 competing programs across the state that are fighting for seeding and qualification spots in the upcoming statewide championship tournament. Unlike basic win-loss leaderboards, the MIAA power ranking system uses a weighted, data-driven formula that accounts for opponent strength, division classification of cross-match opponents, performance in the most recent 10 competitive games, and head-to-head results to generate a holistic, unbiased snapshot of each program’s current competitive level.
In the D1 standings, Westford Academy claims the inaugural top spot with a 12-1 overall record, boosted by 7 wins against other top-20 ranked D1 programs and an undefeated run in the competitive Dual County League. Second place goes to Saint John’s High School of Shrewsbury, which holds an 11-2 record with key early wins over fellow top-5 programs Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High and BC High. Lincoln-Sudbury rounds out the D1 top 3 with a 10-2 record, with their only losses coming against Saint John’s and a non-league upset from D2 powerhouse West Springfield High.
In the D2 division, West Springfield High leads the pack with a perfect 13-0 record, outscoring opponents by an average of 8 points per set across all matches this season. D3’s top spot is held by Medway High, which has won 11 of its first 12 matches of the season, with 8 of those wins coming in straight sets. MIAA officials confirmed that the power rankings will be updated every two weeks for the remainder of the spring season, with the final update on May 28 determining seeding for all three divisions of the state tournament, as well as automatic and at-large qualification spots for programs that meet the minimum 7-win threshold.
This year’s boys volleyball season has seen a 17% increase in participating programs across the state, marking the highest participation rate in MIAA boys volleyball history. Coaches across all divisions have noted that the early release of power rankings has added extra energy to regular season matchups, with teams actively prioritizing key games against higher-ranked opponents to boost their own standing ahead of the tournament cutoff.

As a head coach of a D3 boys volleyball program in western Massachusetts, this first power ranking release is such a valuable checkpoint for our squad. We’re sitting at 16th in the D3 standings right now, and we know exactly which upcoming matches we need to win to climb into the top 12 and lock an automatic tournament spot. The strength of schedule weighting feels really fair this year too—we’ve played 4 top-10 D2 teams already this season, so it’s good to see that challenging schedule reflected in our ranking instead of being punished for taking on tough opponents.
My son is a junior setter on the Lincoln-Sudbury boys volleyball team, and the whole squad was buzzing in the group chat when this list dropped yesterday. They put in 6 hours of extra practice a week all off-season to improve their defense, so seeing them at 3rd in the entire D1 state ranking is such an amazing reward for their hard work. Our whole family is already marking our calendars for the state tournament games in early June.
I’m a libero for the Saint John’s boys volleyball team, and we’re all hyped to be ranked 2nd in D1 in the first list, but we know we’ve got a target on our backs now. We’re playing Westford Academy on the road next week, and that’s definitely going to be the match that decides who holds the top spot in the next ranking update. All of us are putting in extra reps in practice this week to make sure we’re ready to prove we deserve the number 1 spot.
As a long-time MIAA volleyball tournament volunteer, it’s so exciting to see how much this sport has grown across the state. The power ranking system has made the regular season far more engaging for players and fans alike, and this first release already sets up so many must-watch matchups over the next month. I can’t wait to see how the standings shift before the tournament kicks off.
