MIAA 2024 Football Power Poll: Xaverian Surges Into Top Contender Mix, Taunton Slides After Consecutive Upset Losses

Key keywords: MIAA Power Poll, Xaverian Brothers High School football, Taunton High School football, Massachusetts high school football rankings, 2024 MIAA Division 1 football standings, high school football power rankings, MIAA football playoff picture The latest weekly MIAA Power Poll, the most widely referenced ranking system for Massachusetts high school football programs, has sent shockwaves through local high school sports circles this week, as Xaverian Brothers High School’s Hawks have leaped six spots to claim the No. 3 position, while former top-2 contender Taunton High has dropped seven spots to No. 9 following two straight unexpected losses. Coming into the 2024 fall season, Xaverian was viewed as a fringe playoff candidate after finishing 5-6 last year, but the program has put together a dominant five-game win streak capped by a 24-7 blowout of then-No. 2 St. John’s Prep last Friday. The Hawks’ defense has led the charge all season, allowing just 8.2 points per game to date, and held St. John’s Prep — which averaged 34 points per game coming into the matchup — to a single second-half touchdown. Senior running back Danny O’Neill turned in a career performance in the landmark win, rushing for 187 yards and three touchdowns, while senior linebacker Jake Carter recorded 12 tackles and two sacks to earn conference defensive player of the week honors. Xaverian head coach Rob DiLoreto noted in a post-game press conference that the team’s slow 1-2 start to the season was the result of installing a new run-heavy offensive system, and the roster has found its rhythm as players have adjusted to the new scheme over the past month. With three regular season games remaining against BC High, Catholic Memorial, and St. John’s Shrewsbury, Xaverian can lock up a top-2 seed in the Division 1 playoff bracket with two more wins, granting them home-field advantage through the first two rounds of the postseason. On the other side of the rankings shakeup, Taunton’s Tigers have fallen from grace after a 4-0 start that had them pegged as a favorite to repeat as Southeast Conference champions. The team’s downturn began two weeks ago, when starting senior quarterback Tyler Martin suffered a Grade 2 ankle sprain in the first quarter of a matchup against Milford, leading to a 17-14 upset loss. Taunton dropped another game to No. 5 Franklin last week, with their backup quarterback throwing three interceptions and the offense mustering just 109 total yards against Franklin’s top-ranked defensive line. Taunton head coach Brad Sidwell told reporters that Martin is expected to return to the lineup for the team’s October 18 matchup against Attleboro, and the program remains focused on securing a playoff spot with three winnable games left on the schedule. Local high school football analysts note that this week’s power poll reflects the unusual parity of this year’s MIAA Division 1 field, with 10 teams still holding a realistic shot at making a deep playoff run. St. John’s Prep remains at No. 1 in the poll despite their loss to Xaverian, followed by Central Catholic at No. 2, Xaverian at No. 3, Franklin at No. 4, and Lincoln-Sudbury at No. 5.

Went to Xaverian back in 2018, and I’ve been waiting for this team to put it all together for years! That win over St. John’s Prep wasn’t a fluke — their defensive line is absolutely ferocious, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they take home the D1 state title this year. Let’s go Hawks!

My son is a junior offensive lineman for Taunton, and it’s been tough to see them slide these past two weeks, but everyone in the program is still optimistic. Tyler’s ankle sprain isn’t as bad as initially feared, he should be back in the lineup for our game against Attleboro next week. We’re not out of this race yet, trust me.

This power poll shakeup is exactly why MIAA football is so fun to follow every fall. Xaverian’s surge doesn’t come out of nowhere — they’ve been building this roster for three years, and their schedule down the stretch gives them a great chance to lock up a top 2 seed. Taunton’s slide is a reminder of how fragile high school football rankings are, especially when you lose your starting QB for a couple of games. I can’t wait to see how these teams perform in the final month of the regular season.
