Key keywords: Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United legend, Premier League, Liverpool vs Man Utd clash, Old Trafford, hospital admission, football icon, health emergency, Fergie, double red derby Legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been admitted to hospital after suffering a sudden bout of illness on the morning of his former club’s high-profile Premier League fixture against long-time rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday. The 82-year-old Scottish icon, who led United for 27 years between 1986 and 2013, was scheduled to attend the sold-out derby as a guest of the club before he began experiencing discomfort at his Cheshire home, prompting his family to call emergency medical services immediately. Manchester United released an official statement approximately one hour before kick-off confirming the news, noting that Ferguson was in stable condition and receiving care from specialist medical staff, who had expressed optimism about his recovery. The club added that Ferguson’s family had requested privacy during the period, but also passed on their thanks to fans for the outpouring of support that began circulating on social media within minutes of the news breaking. Ferguson, who won 38 major trophies during his tenure at Old Trafford including 13 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups and 2 UEFA Champions League crowns, has been a regular presence at United’s home games since his retirement a decade ago. He previously suffered a serious subarachnoid haemorrhage in 2018 which required emergency surgery, leading fans and football figures across the world to express heightened concern over his latest health scare. Ahead of the derby kick-off, large screens at Old Trafford displayed a message reading “Get Well Soon Sir Alex”, while both sets of players wore black armbands emblazoned with messages of support for Ferguson. Fans of both United and Liverpool united for a minute-long standing ovation in the 7th minute of the match, a tribute to the manager who famously dedicated his career to knocking Liverpool “off their f***ing perch” as England’s most successful domestic club. Both managers Erik ten Hag and Jurgen Klopp spoke of their respect for Ferguson after the game, with ten Hag noting that the entire United squad had dedicated their performance to the former manager, regardless of the final result.

Liverpool supporter here. The rivalry between our two clubs is fierce but it stays on the pitch. Sir Alex is an all-time great of English football, he made the Premier League what it is today with all those iconic title races and comebacks. Wishing him a full and speedy recovery, no one wants to see a legend like him struggle.

I still get chills thinking about the 1999 Champions League final, that last-minute comeback he inspired is the greatest football moment I’ve ever watched. It was so heartwarming to see both sets of fans come together to cheer for him today, that’s the side of football we don’t see enough of. Get well soon Fergie!
