The University of Washington Department of Athletics confirmed the passing of former Huskies defensive lineman Voi Tunuufi in an official public statement released on Tuesday, with no immediate cause of death shared per the request of Tunuufi’s family. A 21-year-old native of South Jordan, Utah, Tunuufi joined the Washington Huskies as a three-star recruit in the 2022 recruiting class, quickly carving out a role as a key rotational contributor on the team’s defensive line across three seasons with the program.
Over his 27 career appearances for the Huskies, Tunuufi recorded 32 total tackles, 6 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 7 tackles for loss, emerging as a fan favorite for his relentless playing style and off-field charisma. His standout performance in the 2023 Pac-12 Championship Game, where he notched a critical third-quarter sack to halt an Oregon Ducks scoring drive, was widely cited as a key factor in the Huskies’ run to the College Football Playoff that same season. Following the conclusion of the 2024 college football season, Tunuufi announced his entry into the NCAA transfer portal, with multiple Power 5 programs reportedly expressing interest in adding him to their 2025 rosters, as he was projected to take on a full-time starting role at his next program.
Head coach Jedd Fisch released a separate statement honoring Tunuufi, noting that “Voi was a light in our program every single day, someone who lifted up every teammate, coach, and staff member he interacted with. His passion for football and for his community was unmatched, and he leaves a legacy that extends far beyond the football field. Our entire program is grieving this unimaginable loss, and we will do everything we can to support his family and his loved ones through this time.”
Tunuufi was also an active participant in the University of Washington’s community outreach programs, volunteering with local Seattle youth football leagues every off-season to run skills clinics for underprivileged kids. The Pac-12 Conference, former Huskies players, and college football programs across the country have already shared public tributes to Tunuufi across social media platforms. The University of Washington has announced that a public memorial service for Tunuufi will be held at Husky Stadium next week, with details to be shared in the coming days for fans, alumni, and community members who wish to pay their respects.

Absolutely devastated to hear this news. I watched Voi play every home game these past three years, and his energy on the field was unmatched. He always took time to sign autographs for kids after games, you could tell how much he loved being a Husky. Sending all my love to his family and teammates during this awful time.
Played on the defensive line with Voi for two seasons, and there wasn’t a harder worker or a better friend in that locker room. He would stay late after practice to help walk-on players perfect their pass rush moves, never acted like he was better than anyone else on the team. This loss hits so much harder than I can put into words. Rest easy big guy, we’ll never forget you.
As a college football reporter who covered the Huskies’ 2023 playoff run, I spoke to Voi twice after games, and he was one of the most thoughtful, genuine athletes I’ve ever interviewed. He was on track to have an incredible career, whether that was at the next level or as a coach after he graduated. This is such a tragic loss for the entire college football community. My thoughts are with everyone who knew and loved him.
My son went to one of the youth football clinics Voi ran last summer, and he still talks about how Voi stayed after to throw the ball around with him for 20 minutes even after all the other coaches left. He made such a positive impact on so many kids in this community, and that’s the legacy he should be remembered for. Sending prayers to his family.
