For the past three weeks, the tight-knit Utah MomTok community has been engulfed in viral drama surrounding long-time friend group members Mikayla Matthews, Taylor Frankie Paul, and Jessi Draper, after thousands of TikTok users began calling out Matthews for allegedly abandoning her two friends amid their ongoing legal and personal public scandals.
Paul and Draper, who rose to fame alongside Matthews for their relatable parenting content and unfiltered takes on motherhood in conservative Utah, have faced widespread public backlash over the past month following leaked court documents related to a 2023 real estate fraud investigation, as well as resurfaced clips of past controversial remarks about fellow creators. Fans quickly noticed that Matthews, who has historically collaborated with the pair on content and appeared at multiple public events with them, had not posted any public statements defending the two, nor had she liked or commented on their recent social media updates addressing the backlash.
The criticism escalated earlier this week, when hundreds of users flooded Matthews’ recent Instagram posts and TikTok comment sections calling her a “fake friend”, pointing out that both Paul and Draper had publicly defended Matthews multiple times during her 2022 high-profile divorce and custody battle, even appearing on her live streams to push back against false rumors about her parenting.
On a 45-minute TikTok live streamed Thursday night, an emotional Matthews addressed the backlash head on, saying she was “absolutely fed up” with the false narrative about her friendships. “I have been in constant contact with both Taylor and Jessi this entire time,” she told her 3.2 million live viewers, holding up blurred screenshots of private text exchanges with both women dated as recently as Wednesday. “I donated $5,000 to Taylor’s legal fund last week, I brought Jessi and her kids dinner three nights ago when she was too stressed to cook. Public support isn’t the only kind of support that matters, and I’m not going to exploit my friends’ worst moments for clout or to make random internet strangers happy.”
Matthews also noted that the friend group had a longstanding agreement to keep private acts of support off social media, to avoid turning personal struggles into content, and that she believed a former associate of the group had been intentionally leaking partial information to stir up harassment against her. As of Friday, the hashtag #MikaylaTaylorJessiDrama had amassed over 120 million views on TikTok, with fans split between defending Matthews’ choice to keep support private and arguing that she owes the pair public defense after they supported her during her own scandal.

As someone who’s followed all three of them for 4 years, I totally get Mikayla’s point. Public performative support means nothing if you’re not showing up privately, and she has actual receipts of being there for Taylor and Jessi off camera. All the people calling her a fake friend need to log off and stop inserting themselves into relationships they know nothing about.
Sorry, I don’t buy this excuse at all. When Mikayla was going through her divorce and all that nasty custody drama, Taylor posted three separate TikToks defending her and brought her on live multiple times to let her tell her side of the story. The least she could do is post a 10-second Instagram story saying she’s in their corner, especially when everyone is dragging Taylor and Jessi nonstop online. It’s giving selfish, plain and simple.
This whole drama is so exhausting for no reason. None of us know the full dynamic of their friendship behind the scenes. Maybe Mikayla is telling the truth, maybe there’s unresolved tension we don’t see. Either way, sending hate to any of them is so unnecessary—they’re all real people going through really hard, high-stress situations.
Wait a second, if Taylor and Jessi aren’t publicly calling out Mikayla for not supporting them, why are random fans so pressed? If the two people who are supposedly being “abandoned” aren’t upset, that says everything. People need to stop making other people’s friendships their entire personality online.
