Warner Bros. Pictures officially announced on Wednesday that Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman will co-star opposite Jurassic World: Rebirth lead Mamoudou Athie in an untitled psychological thriller, directed by Maja Vrvilo, best known for her work on the critically acclaimed *Clarice* series, with a script from rising screenwriter Eliot Higgins.
The film is set in a snow-blanketed Boston, where Portman plays a retired FBI profiler who left the force after a traumatic unsolved serial murder case 10 years prior. When a new string of killings bearing identical signatures to her old case emerges across the city, she is pulled back into investigative work, paired with Athie’s character: a sharp, impulsive rookie homicide detective who has spent months digging into the new murders on his own. As the pair dig deeper into the case, they uncover a sprawling web of corruption tied to the Massachusetts state attorney’s office, as well as dark secrets from the profiler’s past that put both of their lives at risk. Production insiders confirmed the film will carry an R rating, leaning into tense, character-driven psychological stakes rather than over-the-top action or supernatural elements, with heavy inspiration drawn from real-life cold case files.
The project has been in development for two years, with Portman attached as both a lead and executive producer since its earliest stages. Filming is scheduled to kick off in December 2024 on location in Boston and Montreal, with a planned theatrical release set for Halloween weekend 2025. Portman, who earned widespread acclaim for her performance in 2023’s *May December*, has spoken publicly about seeking out grounded, character-focused projects after completing her work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while Athie’s breakout turn as the quick-witted dinosaur handler in *Jurassic World: Rebirth* earned him global name recognition and a string of offers for both blockbuster and independent projects. Both leads have already begun preparation for their roles: Portman spent three weeks shadowing a retired FBI profiler based in Boston to learn behavioral analysis techniques, while Athie has completed ride-alongs with the Boston Police Department’s homicide unit to build authenticity for his character.

OMG I’ve been begging Natalie to do another thriller ever since Black Swan! Pairing her with Mamoudou, who was easily the most charismatic part of Jurassic World: Rebirth? This is already my most anticipated movie of 2025, I’ll be first in line for opening night tickets.
This is such a smart casting choice from Warner Bros. Natalie has the range to pull off the layered, trauma-burdened ex-profiler role perfectly, and Mamoudou has already proven he can hold his own opposite A-list leads in big franchise films. I’m really excited to see how their on-screen dynamic works in a gritty, no-CGI thriller that prioritizes writing and performance over spectacle.
As a big true crime fan, the premise alone has me hooked, but the cast makes this a must-see. It’s so nice to see studios investing in original R-rated thrillers instead of just churning out more franchise installments. I’m already predicting this will be a sleeper hit next Halloween and might even get some awards buzz for the lead performances.
I’m so happy Mamoudou is getting these high-profile roles outside of Jurassic World! He’s such a talented actor, and getting to work opposite someone as respected as Natalie Portman is such a well-deserved career win for him. I can’t wait to see what he brings to this detective character.
