OSU Buckeyes Coach Ryan Day’s Son RJ Day Commits to Play for Big Ten Rival Michigan Wolverines in 2026 Recruiting Class

Key keywords: Ryan Day, RJ Day, Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Big Ten football rivalry, 2026 college football recruit, college football commitment, OSU football coaching family, NCAA Division I football recruiting, Sherrone Moore The college football world was sent into a frenzy on Tuesday when RJ Day, the son of Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day, announced his official commitment to play for Big Ten rival Michigan Wolverines as part of the 2026 recruiting class. A consensus three-star pro-style quarterback out of Dublin Jerome High School in Dublin, Ohio, RJ has long been viewed as one of the top quarterback prospects in the Midwest, with 247Sports ranking him 27th among pro-style QBs in his class after a standout 2023 season that saw him throw for 2,147 yards and 22 touchdowns against just 4 interceptions. For years, college football analysts and fans assumed RJ would follow his father to Ohio State, where he has spent countless hours on the sidelines and at team practices growing up. He received an official offer from the Buckeyes in 2023, along with offers from 12 other Power 5 programs including Penn State, Notre Dame, and Oregon. However, RJ explained in his commitment statement that he chose Michigan to build his own legacy separate from his father’s iconic status at Ohio State, noting that first-year Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore’s offensive scheme aligns perfectly with his strengths as a pocket passer with above-average mobility and decision-making skills. Ryan Day, who has led Ohio State to three Big Ten titles and two College Football Playoff appearances since taking over as head coach in 2019, addressed the commitment during a scheduled press conference Wednesday, saying that while he and his family are lifelong Buckeyes fans, he fully supports his son’s decision. “At the end of the day, RJ is a young man who gets to choose his own path,” Day told reporters. “I’m proud of him for putting in the work to get to this point, and I’ll be cheering for him every single week except for one, if he ever steps on the field against us.” The commitment adds a historic new layer to the decades-long Ohio State-Michigan rivalry, widely considered the most intense in all of college sports. If RJ earns playing time as early as his freshman season in 2026, fans could see him face off against his father’s Buckeyes in the annual "The Game" matchup as early as November 2026, a scenario that multiple network executives have already hinted would be flexed to a national prime time slot. Moore also released a statement welcoming RJ to the Michigan program, calling him “a talented, high-character player who fits exactly what we’re building here in Ann Arbor.”

Wow, I never saw this coming! The Ohio State-Michigan rivalry is already the most intense in all of college sports, and now we’ve got a father-son narrative heading into The Game in a couple years? I’m both shocked and hyped for how chaotic that matchup is going to be. Ryan Day has my respect for supporting his son even if he’s heading to the enemy camp.

As a lifelong Wolverines fan, this is the best recruiting news we’ve gotten all cycle! RJ Day is a talented QB with football IQ off the charts, obviously, growing up around his dad’s playbook. I can already picture him leading a game-winning drive against OSU in 2027, that would be legendary. Welcome to the team, RJ!

This is such a cool story for college football. People forget these recruits are 16 or 17 year old kids first, not just pieces for their favorite teams. RJ choosing to pave his own path instead of taking the easy route to play for his dad at OSU takes a lot of courage, and I’m excited to see how his career develops no matter who he plays for.

The media circus around the first time RJ Day lines up under center for Michigan against Ryan Day’s Buckeyes is going to be insane. I already have that game circled on my 2027 calendar. There’s no way the networks don’t flex that to prime time the second he’s eligible to play.
