Amazon MGM Studios officially announced on Wednesday that its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the classic 1980s mecha animated series *Voltron: Defender of the Universe* will skip a global theatrical release entirely and premiere exclusively on Prime Video at a to-be-announced date in late 2025. The news ends years of speculation over the distribution plan for the project, which was originally under development at Universal Pictures with a planned 2024 theatrical window before Amazon acquired MGM in 2022 and took over rights to the Voltron IP.
Set to be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, best known for his work on Netflix’s *Red Notice* and Prime Video’s *The Man from Toronto*, the live-action Voltron has a reported production budget of $165 million, making it one of the most expensive direct-to-streaming titles Amazon has ever greenlit. Studio executives noted in the official press release that the decision to bypass theaters was driven by two core factors: the IP’s massive global cross-generational fanbase, and Prime Video’s ability to reach over 200 million paid Prime members across 240 countries and territories simultaneously on premiere day.
“Voltron is a beloved franchise that resonates with audiences who grew up watching the original cartoon in the 80s, as well as younger viewers who discovered the 2016 Netflix animated reboot,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, in a statement. “Releasing the film directly on Prime Video means we can make it accessible to every fan at the same time, no matter where they are in the world, without restricting viewership to audiences who can access local theaters or afford high ticket and concession prices.”
Industry analysts have framed the move as a strategic bet for Amazon as it competes for market share against rival streaming services including Netflix, Disney+ and Max. The Voltron IP has particularly strong traction in Asian markets, where mecha content consistently draws large audiences, and the direct-to-streaming release is expected to drive a significant spike in new Prime subscriptions in regions including Southeast Asia, Japan and South Korea.
The production team has confirmed that the live-action film will stay true to the original series’ core premise: five young pilots from across the galaxy operate five robotic lion vehicles that combine to form the giant defender Voltron, as they fight to protect the universe from intergalactic evil. Casting announcements are expected to be released in the first quarter of 2024, with production scheduled to kick off in mid-2024 across locations in New Zealand and Iceland.

Omg I’ve been waiting for a live-action Voltron since I was 10! Skipping theaters is perfect for me because I can rewatch all the giant robot fight scenes with my little brother 100 times at home without annoying other moviegoers lmao
Smart move from Amazon. Voltron has a huge global nostalgic fanbase but it’s hard to guarantee a $400M+ theatrical box office to cover the production and marketing budget. Dropping it directly on Prime Video will drive a ton of new Prime signups, especially in Asian markets where the original IP is super popular
Fingers crossed they don’t ruin the source material! I hope they keep the core dynamic of the 5 pilots and the iconic Voltron formation sequence, no weird unnecessary plot changes just for shock value. I’m already counting down the days to the premiere
Wait, does this mean we’ll get a Voltron spin-off series too if the movie does well on Prime? That would be a dream come true for long time fans who have been craving more content set in that universe for decades
