The WTA 250-level clay court tournament, which offered $267,082 in total prize money and 280 WTA ranking points for the singles champion, hosted 32 top-100 singles players and 16 doubles pairs over 7 days of competition. Former world No. 3 Elina Svitolina took home the singles title after a dominant 6-2, 7-5 victory over 2021 Strasbourg champion Daria Kasatkina in the final. Svitolina’s run to the crown was marked by consistent resilience: the Ukrainian star defeated French wild card Léolia Jeanjean in straight sets in the first round, fought back from a set down to beat qualifier Yulia Starodubtseva in the second round, swept No.7 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, and pulled off a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 comeback win over No.3 seed Danielle Collins in a 2-hour-17-minute semifinal thriller. In the final, Svitolina got off to a blistering start, landing 78% of her first serves and breaking Kasatkina’s serve three times to take the first set in just 29 minutes. Kasatkina adjusted her tactics in the second set, leaning into heavy topspin forehands and sharp drop shots to build a 5-3 lead and earn a chance to serve for the set, but Svitolina raised her level on return, winning 12 of the last 16 points to claim four straight games and seal the title. The victory marks Svitolina’s 7th career WTA singles title, her 3rd career clay court crown, and her second WTA title since returning to tour after the birth of her daughter in 2022. In the doubles competition, top seeds Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez claimed the crown with a 6-3, 6-2 win over second seeds Desirae Krawczyk and Demi Schuurs, marking their third doubles title of the 2024 season. Both singles finalists and the doubles champions will carry their form into the 2024 French Open, which kicks off in Paris on May 26.

As a long-time Svitolina fan, I’m so proud of how she’s bounced back since becoming a mom! That comeback from 3-5 down in the second set of the final was pure grit, and she’s easily one of the biggest dark horses for the French Open title if she keeps this level up. I already have her penciled in for a quarterfinal run at Roland Garros at minimum.

I’m gutted for Kasatkina, she played such a smart, consistent tournament all week and that second set lead really felt like it was hers to close out. Still, making the final right before the French Open is such a huge confidence boost, especially on clay where she’s always felt most comfortable. I’m still optimistic she’ll make a deep run in Paris, she’s got the game to beat anyone on her day.

This Strasbourg result is such a great reminder of how competitive the women’s clay swing is this year. Svitolina has always been so underrated on clay, and her ability to stay calm under pressure in the final really shows how much her game has matured since her return. The doubles final was also a joy to watch – Melichar-Martinez and Perez are easily the most consistent doubles team on tour right now, I wouldn’t be shocked at all if they take the French Open doubles title too.
