The highly anticipated NCAA Super Regional baseball series between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Oklahoma State Cowboys was officially postponed on Friday, June 7, just hours before the first pitch was scheduled to take place at OSU’s home field, O’Brate Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The decision came after the National Weather Service issued a level 3 severe thunderstorm warning for the Stillwater area, forecasting 70+ mile per hour wind gusts, large hail, and potential isolated tornado activity throughout the evening.
NCAA tournament officials, alongside stadium management and local public safety departments, held an emergency meeting two hours before the scheduled 6 p.m. CT first pitch to evaluate conditions, ultimately agreeing that postponement was the only responsible choice to protect the safety of players, coaching staff, event personnel, and the more than 8,000 fans expected to attend the opening game of the best-of-three series. The winner of the Super Regional series will earn a spot in the 2024 Men’s College World Series, held annually in Omaha, Nebraska, the highest honor in NCAA Division I college baseball.
At the time of the announcement, roughly 3,000 fans had already entered the stadium, and staff worked quickly to guide attendees to safe shelter before the initial wave of storms rolled through the area. Ticket holders for the originally scheduled Game 1 will be able to use their existing tickets for the rescheduled matchup, set for 12 p.m. CT on Saturday, June 8. Officials noted that if severe weather persists into Saturday, the series will be adjusted to fit a condensed schedule, with potential doubleheaders if needed to ensure the series concludes by June 9 to avoid disrupting the College World Series timeline.
Nebraska enters the series as the 2024 Big Ten Conference champions, holding a 45-15 overall record after sweeping their regional tournament with three consecutive wins. Oklahoma State, meanwhile, finished as runner-up in the Big 12 Conference with a 47-16 record, and is playing on their home field where they have won 31 of 35 games this season. Both teams released statements shortly after the postponement announcement, noting they supported the decision and were prepared to compete at full strength once play resumes.

As a diehard Nebraska Cornhuskers fan who drove 6 hours to Stillwater for the game, I’m obviously disappointed, but safety always comes first. I’d rather wait an extra day and watch our guys play in safe conditions than risk anyone getting hurt by bad weather. Let’s go Big Red!
I was already in the student section with my friends when they announced the postponement. It’s a bummer, but O’Brate Stadium staff handled this really smoothly, getting everyone evacuated to covered areas before the storms hit. We’ll be back tomorrow louder than ever to cheer the Cowboys on to a win!
This is such a smart call from the NCAA. I’ve seen too many college baseball games push through bad weather and end up with fans getting injured or players slipping on wet fields and suffering season-ending injuries. Both these teams have had incredible seasons, and they deserve to play this series on a level, safe field without weather distractions.
As a volunteer staffer at the stadium, I can confirm the weather rolled in way faster than we initially expected. The coordination between the NCAA, stadium management, and local emergency services was seamless to get everyone out safely. We’re all prepped and ready to host the game tomorrow as long as the weather holds.
