Comeback of the Year? Unseeded German Wild Card Paul Secures Spot in 2024 Hamburg Open Final

Key keywords: Comeback of the Year, 2024 Hamburg European Open, Maximilian Paul, ATP 500 Hamburg, unseeded tennis player, German men's tennis, semi-final upset, Hamburg Open 2024 final, wild card entry, all-German tennis final The 2024 ATP 500 Hamburg European Open has delivered the most unexpected underdog story of the men’s tennis season so far, as 22-year-old unseeded wild card entrant Maximilian Paul punched his ticket to the tournament final on Saturday, sparking widespread debate over whether his historic run qualifies as the 2024 Comeback of the Year. Just 18 months ago, Paul’s professional tennis career looked to be in jeopardy after he underwent extensive shoulder surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff, an injury that forced him to drop off the ATP Tour entirely and saw his world ranking plummet from a career-high of No. 122 in 2022 to No. 1132 earlier this year. He only returned to competitive play in April 2024, competing in low-level ITF and Challenger events to rebuild his match fitness and ranking points, and was granted a wild card to the Hamburg main draw earlier this month as a reward for his relentless rehabilitation efforts. Paul’s run to the final has been marked by a string of stunning upsets over higher-ranked opposition. He kicked off his tournament with a straight-sets win over world No. 27 Karen Khachanov in the first round, followed by a tight three-set victory over 11th seed Sebastian Korda in the second round. He then defeated fellow German fan favorite Jan-Lennard Struff in three tense sets in the quarterfinals, before outlasting 6th seed Alex de Minaur 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-2 in Saturday’s semi-final to secure his first ever ATP Tour final appearance. His upcoming final against homegrown top seed Alexander Zverev marks the first all-German men’s singles final at the Hamburg Open in 23 years, with all 13,000 tickets for the championship match selling out within hours of Paul’s semi-final win. Speaking to reporters after his semi-final victory, Paul said: “I spent six months after surgery not even being able to lift a racket, and there were days I thought I’d never get to play professional tennis again. To be here in the final of my home tournament, playing in front of a crowd that’s supported me every step of the way, is more than I ever could have dreamed of. I don’t care if I win or lose tomorrow, I’ve already won just by getting here.” ATP officials confirmed earlier this week that Paul has already been added to the shortlist for the 2024 ATP Comeback of the Year award, with many tennis pundits noting that he is the clear favorite to take home the honor regardless of the final result.

I’ve been following Paul’s run since the first round and I can’t believe how consistent he’s been even against top 30 players. That forehand he’s developed after the injury is absolutely lethal, if he brings that energy to the final against Zverev, he might just pull off the biggest upset of the entire ATP season this year. So happy for him after all the rehab struggles!

As someone who covers lower-tier ATP events for a living, I saw Paul play a Challenger event in June where he lost in the first round, and I would never have guessed he’d make an ATP 500 final two months later. This is exactly why we love tennis: underdog stories that remind you how much grit and hard work can pay off. His comeback is absolutely deserving of the Comeback of the Year award, no question.

I’m attending the final tomorrow and I already bought my Paul jersey! It’s so exciting to have two German players in the Hamburg final for the first time in over 20 years. Even if he doesn’t win, this run already put him on the map, and I can’t wait to see what he does for the rest of the season. The home crowd is going to be behind him 100%.

I still can’t get over how low his ranking was just a few months ago. To go from 1100+ to an ATP 500 final in 4 months is unheard of. The ATP might need to rename the Comeback of the Year award after him if he keeps this up, this is absolutely legendary stuff.
