The highly anticipated Week 7 UFL XFL Conference matchup between the DC Defenders and Orlando Storm took place this past Saturday at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, drawing a crowd of 18,217 passionate spring football fans. Entering the contest, the Defenders held a 4-2 record and sat third in the XFL Conference standings, while the 3-3 Storm looked to climb into playoff position with a win on their home turf.
The first half was dominated by defensive stops and methodical offensive drives. Orlando struck first on their opening possession, with star running back Devin Singletary breaking off a 19-yard rushing touchdown to put the Storm up 7-0 less than five minutes into the first quarter. DC struggled to move the ball for most of the first half, until quarterback Jordan Ta'amu connected with wide receiver Chris Blair for a 32-yard touchdown pass with 1:12 left in the second quarter to tie the game at 7-7. Orlando responded quickly, kicker Jake Bates nailing a 37-yard field goal as time expired in the half to give the Storm a 10-7 lead heading into the break.
The third quarter saw momentum swing back and forth between the two squads. DC took their first lead of the game midway through the quarter when linebacker Frank Ginda intercepted an errant pass from Orlando QB Jarrett Guarantano and returned it 28 yards for a pick-six, putting the Defenders up 14-10. Orlando answered just two drives later, with Guarantano finding wide receiver Kade Warner for a 15-yard touchdown pass to retake a 17-14 lead heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter delivered one of the most dramatic finishes of the 2024 UFL season. DC tied the game at 17-17 with a 29-yard field goal from kicker Matt McCrane with 4:12 left to play. Orlando then marched 73 yards down the field, with Guarantano punching in a 1-yard rushing touchdown with 1:02 remaining to put the Storm up 21-17, seemingly sealing the win. However, Ta'amu led the Defenders on a blistering 92-yard drive in just 54 seconds, capping the series with an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Josh Pederson with only 8 seconds left on the clock to secure a 24-21 win for DC.
With the victory, the Defenders improve to 5-2 and move to second place in the XFL Conference, solidifying their spot in the playoff hunt. The Storm fall to 3-4, sitting fourth in the conference and needing to win at least two of their final three regular season games to qualify for the postseason. DC will face the Houston Roughnecks at home next week, while Orlando will travel to take on the Arlington Renegades.

Still can’t believe that final drive! Ta’amu is hands down the best QB in the UFL right now, the Defenders are definitely going all the way to the championship this year. That last-second TD to Pederson had me screaming so loud my neighbor knocked on my door 😂
Heartbroken as a long-time Storm fan. We played so well for 59 full minutes and just blew it at the very end. Our secondary had zero answer for Ta’amu and Blair on that final series, we need to fix our late-game coverage immediately if we even want a shot at the playoffs. Still rooting for the boys though, they’ve got more fight than most people give them credit for.
What an absolute banger of a game! This is exactly why spring football is so underrated. Both teams left everything on the field, and that finish was better than half the NFL regular season games we saw last year. I’m already hyped for a potential rematch between these two teams in the XFL Conference championship later this year.
As a neutral viewer who tuned in for the first time this season, I’m hooked on UFL now. The pace of play is way faster than the NFL, and the players clearly have so much passion for the game. I’m already planning to go to the Defenders vs Roughnecks game next week in DC!
