"Something’s f***ed up, this is impossible": Verstappen "confused" by car in qualifying

Key keywords: Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing, F1 qualifying, car performance issue, Formula 1 2024, unexpected qualifying result, Grand Prix weekend, F1 driver radio The 2024 Belgian Grand Prix qualifying session delivered one of the most shocking twists of the F1 season so far, as three-time world champion Max Verstappen was left furious and confused after a sudden, unexplained car issue derailed his expected pole position run. Coming into the weekend, Verstappen was the overwhelming favorite to take his 11th consecutive pole position, having topped all three free practice sessions by comfortable margins and dominated the first two stages of qualifying. The Dutch driver posted the fastest time in both Q1 and Q2, nearly half a second clear of his closest rival Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, and appeared set to extend his record-breaking pole streak as he headed out for his first Q3 flying lap. Halfway through the lap, however, Verstappen’s radio crackled to life with his now-viral message: “Something’s f***ed up, this is impossible. The car is not responding at all, I have no grip and the power is dropping out randomly.” He aborted the lap immediately, trundling back to the pits while his engineering team scrambled to run diagnostics on the RB20 chassis. Despite a last-ditch attempt to head out for a second Q3 lap with last-minute setup adjustments, Verstappen could only manage the 7th fastest time, marking his worst qualifying result in over 18 months. Speaking to reporters after the session, Verstappen said he was completely confused by the issue, noting that the car had felt perfect in every session leading up to Q3. “There’s no logical explanation for this right now,” he told reporters. “We didn’t change anything between Q2 and Q3, the car was flying one minute and completely undrivable the next. I’ve never felt something like this in my career, it’s really frustrating because we had pole in the bag for sure.” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner echoed Verstappen’s confusion, telling media that the engineering team was running urgent tests to identify the root cause, with early speculation pointing to a potential hybrid power unit sensor failure or a sudden aerodynamic component fault. The result throws Sunday’s Grand Prix wide open, with Leclerc taking pole position ahead of Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez and Mercedes driver George Russell. Verstappen, who currently holds a 62-point lead in the driver’s championship, has vowed to fight through the field in the race, but acknowledged that the unknown issue adds extra uncertainty to his race day strategy.

I’ve been following F1 for 20 years and I’ve never seen a car go from that dominant to completely broken in the space of 15 minutes. Max handled it as well as he could, and I wouldn’t count him out for the win tomorrow even starting P7 – that guy is a magician when he’s charging through the field.

As a neutral fan, this is the best thing that could have happened to this season! We’ve had so many predictable Verstappen poles and wins this year, this shake-up makes the race actually exciting. I’m low-key hoping Red Bull doesn’t fix it fully so we get a real wheel-to-wheel battle at the front for once.

The engineering side of this is so fascinating. They ran the exact same setup in Q2 and Q3, no changes to core parts, no contact with walls or harsh kerbs, and the performance just dropped off a cliff. My bet is on a faulty MGU-K sensor that cut power delivery halfway through the lap – they’ll probably have it fixed in time for the race, but it’s a big wake up call for Red Bull that they aren’t invincible.

It’s so rare to see Max this visibly frustrated, that just shows how out of the ordinary this issue is. He’s usually so calm even when things go wrong, so the fact he was swearing on the radio and looked so confused after the session really drives home how bad the problem was. Can’t wait to see how he recovers in the race.
