As the 2024 Major League Baseball regular season enters its critical mid-summer stretch, one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the week will see veteran right-hander Chris Bassitt take the mound for the Baltimore Orioles against his former team, the Toronto Blue Jays, at Rogers Centre on Friday night. Bassitt, who spent the entire 2022 season as a core member of the Blue Jays starting rotation, remains a fan favorite in Toronto for his relentless work ethic, consistent on-field performance, and extensive off-field contributions to local youth baseball programs during his tenure with the club.
In 2022, Bassitt posted a 15-8 record with a 3.42 ERA across 181.2 innings pitched for the Blue Jays, racking up 167 strikeouts and helping lead the team to a wildcard playoff berth. His departure in free agency ahead of the 2023 season left a noticeable gap in the Blue Jays rotation, and many fans and analysts have openly wondered what the team’s postseason trajectory could have been if they had re-signed the durable righty.
Ahead of Friday’s start, Bassitt has been in career-best form for the first-place Orioles, holding a 7-4 record with a 3.17 ERA through 14 starts this season. He has recorded six consecutive quality starts, pitching at least six innings and allowing three earned runs or fewer in each outing, with 72 strikeouts and only 16 walks over that span. His familiarity with the Blue Jays’ core hitters is expected to be a major advantage: active Toronto hitters have combined for a .229 batting average, .301 on-base percentage, and .385 slugging percentage across 128 career plate appearances against Bassitt, with only three total home runs.
For the Blue Jays, the matchup carries significant weight in the tight American League East playoff race. Toronto currently sits in third place in the division, 2.5 games behind the second-place Tampa Bay Rays and 4 games behind Bassitt’s Orioles, with every divisional win carrying double value in the standings. Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters ahead of the series that the team has immense respect for Bassitt, but will be ready to compete from the first pitch. "We know how good Chris is, he knows our guys really well too, so it’s going to be a battle," Schneider said. Bassitt also shared that while he holds immense affection for the city of Toronto and its fans, his focus will be on securing a win for his current team once he steps onto the mound. The Blue Jays organization also confirmed they will run a tribute video for Bassitt ahead of the first pitch to honor his contributions to the team and the local community.

I still have my Bassitt #40 2022 playoff jersey hanging in my closet! Dude was an absolute workhorse for us that year, I’ll cheer for him before and after the game but once he’s on the mound? I’m screaming for our boys to touch him up for 5 runs minimum.
This matchup is such a fun chess match. Bassitt knows every single one of the Blue Jays’ core hitters’ tendencies inside and out, and the Jays hitters know all of his pitch patterns too. I’d be shocked if we don’t get a low-scoring, 1-run ballgame out of this one.
Bassitt is one of the most underrated pitchers in the league over the last 5 years. His consistency is insane, no matter what team he’s on he’s always a lock to give you 6+ solid innings. Even as a Yankees fan I respect the hell out of him, this should be a great watch.
The tribute video the Jays are gonna run for him before first pitch is gonna make me cry. He did so much for the city’s youth baseball programs when he was here, he’s such a class act. No one’s gonna be mad if he pitches a great game as long as we pull out the W in the end.
