Multiple league sources confirmed on Thursday that three NBA teams have registered formal trade interest in Boston Celtics star guard Jaylen Brown, less than 12 months after the 27-year-old signed a record 5-year, $304 million supermax extension with the franchise. The rumored suitors come as the Celtics weigh long-term roster options following their second NBA Finals loss in three seasons, with front office officials privately acknowledging they will listen to incoming offers for either member of their All-Star Tatum-Brown duo if the package delivers enough value to push the team closer to a title.
First among the interested teams is the Indiana Pacers, who have emerged as one of the fastest-rising contenders in the Eastern Conference behind All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton. The Pacers finished 47-35 last season but fell to the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the playoffs, with front office leadership identifying a two-way perimeter scorer as their top off-season priority. League insiders note the Pacers can offer a package headlined by veteran sharpshooter Buddy Hield, promising sophomore wing Bennedict Mathurin, and two unprotected first-round draft picks in 2026 and 2028, a haul that would immediately give the Celtics additional depth and future flexibility.
The second reported suitor is the Atlanta Hawks, who are undergoing a full roster overhaul after missing the playoffs for the first time in four seasons. The Hawks have already made All-Star guard Dejounte Murray available in trade talks, and sources indicate they view Brown as the ideal foundational piece to pair with star point guard Trae Young, as his elite perimeter defense and ability to score off-ball would address the biggest weaknesses of Atlanta’s current roster. The Hawks are prepared to offer Murray, a 2025 protected first-round pick, and a 2027 unprotected first-round pick in exchange for Brown, per multiple reports.
Third, the Detroit Pistons have also registered interest in Brown, as the rebuilding franchise looks to add a proven All-Star to lead their young core of Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and Jalen Duren. The Pistons hold more than seven future first-round draft picks through 2030, giving them more than enough capital to outbid other suitors if they choose to prioritize a win-now move. Celtics leadership has not yet responded to any of the initial offers, with sources noting the team is still prioritizing bringing back their current core to compete for a title next season, but will continue to evaluate all incoming trade proposals through the draft and free agency period.

As a long-time Celtics season ticket holder, I’m furious at even the thought of trading Jaylen Brown. He and Jayson Tatum took this franchise to two Finals in three years, and you don’t break up a proven core that’s still in their prime just for a bunch of draft picks and role players. It would be the worst front office decision in team history if they pull the trigger on this.
If the Indiana Pacers can land Jaylen Brown without giving up Tyrese Haliburton or Bennedict Mathurin, we’re instantly a legitimate title contender next year. Our biggest flaw last season was not having a wing that can lock down top opposing scorers and hit clutch shots in the playoffs, and Brown checks both of those boxes perfectly.
This makes absolutely no sense for the Detroit Pistons long-term. Brown is 27 years old, and their core of Cade, Ivey, and Duren are all 23 or younger. They’d have to give up a massive haul of draft picks to get him, and they’re still at least 3 years away from being a real playoff contender anyway. He’ll be past his prime by the time their young core is ready to compete.
As an Atlanta Hawks fan, I really hope our front office doesn’t make this move. We already saw that Trae Young can’t coexist with another ball-dominant guard in Dejounte Murray, why would we trade Murray for Brown who has the exact same fit issues with Tatum in Boston? He’d just clash with Trae over touches and we’d be right back where we started.
