The 2024 Roland Garros women’s singles draw delivered two headline-making results on Day 6 of the tournament, as 17-year-old rising star Mirra Andreeva cruised into the fourth round with a dominant straight-sets win, while 2023 runner-up Karolina Muchova suffered a shock early exit at the hands of Swiss veteran Jil Teichmann.
Ranked No.36 in the WTA standings ahead of the tournament, Andreeva – the youngest player remaining in the women’s main draw – put on a clinical display against her 28th-seeded opponent, winning 6-3, 6-1 in just 69 minutes. The Russian teenager showcased exceptional court coverage, a powerful baseline game and remarkable composure under pressure, recording 22 winners to only 7 unforced errors throughout the match. Her run at this year’s French Open marks her best Grand Slam performance to date, after she reached the third round of both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2023. Up next, Andreeva is set to face 14th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, who advanced to the fourth round after a grueling three-set battle against Elina Svitolina.
On the other side of the draw, last year’s finalist Karolina Muchova, who was widely considered a legitimate title contender this year after strong clay-court showings in the lead-up to the tournament, fell to Teichmann in a 6-7(5), 4-6 defeat that lasted one hour and 47 minutes. Muchova, who struggled with a nagging knee injury that flared up in the first set, failed to convert 8 of her 10 break point opportunities, while Teichmann served consistently well and produced a series of aggressive forehand winners to seal the upset. The win marks Teichmann’s first top-10 victory since 2022, when she defeated then-world No.3 Anett Kontaveit at the Madrid Open. Ranked No.112 coming into Roland Garros, Teichmann came through qualifying to reach the main draw, and will now face 22nd seed Zheng Qinwen in the fourth round.
Tournament analysts have noted that the 2024 women’s singles draw at Roland Garros has been defined by unexpected results and breakout performances from young and lower-ranked players, with 6 of the top 10 seeds already eliminated before the fourth round. For Andreeva, her continued run at the tournament has cemented her status as one of the most promising young talents in women’s tennis, with many fans and pundits tipping her to win a Grand Slam title within the next two years. For Teichmann, the upset win over Muchova represents a major career comeback, after she struggled with injuries and poor form over the past two seasons that saw her ranking drop outside the top 100.

I’ve been following Andreeva’s career since she debuted last year, and it’s incredible to see how much she’s improved in just 12 months. Her composure on court is unbelievable for a 17-year-old, I wouldn’t be surprised if she goes all the way to the semi-finals or even the final this year.
Such a shame to see Muchova go out so early, she looked so sharp in the first two rounds. I know she’s still recovering from that knee issue she had earlier this year, so hopefully she can get back to full fitness for Wimbledon and the rest of the grass court season.
Teichmann deserves all the credit for this win! She’s worked so hard to come back from her injuries, and to beat a player as talented as Muchova on a big stage like Roland Garros is such a huge achievement. I’m rooting for her to keep going deep in the draw.
This is exactly why I love women’s tennis right now, there’s so much depth and anyone can beat anyone on any given day. The fourth round matches are going to be must-watch television, especially Andreeva vs Haddad Maia, that’s going to be an absolute banger.
