The 2024 American Motocross Series’ highly anticipated Potomac Nats event announced a major roster shakeup on Wednesday, as fan-favorite rider Matt Smith has been officially ruled out of competition, with rising prospect Chip Ellis set to take his spot on the Denso Buell factory team. Smith, who currently sits 3rd in the series’ overall rider standings, sustained a Grade 2 MCL sprain during a practice lap at the Potomac Raceway earlier this week, with team medics confirming he will require a minimum of three weeks of rest before returning to full training. Denso Buell’s team principal confirmed the news in an official press release, noting that Smith failed to pass the mandatory pre-event health screening administered by series officials, making his withdrawal unavoidable.
Smith, a native of the Potomac region, was widely considered the pre-race favorite for this weekend’s event, having claimed two podium finishes and one race win across the first four stops of the 2024 season. In a statement posted to his personal Instagram account, Smith expressed his disappointment at missing the home race, but voiced full confidence in his replacement. “I’ve been looking forward to racing in front of my family, friends and local fans all year, so this is definitely a tough pill to swallow,” Smith wrote. “But I’m going to be in the pits all weekend working closely with Chip, sharing all my notes on the Potomac track’s quirks and helping him dial in the bike. He’s put in the work, he’s fast, and I know he’s going to make the team proud.”
Ellis, 24, has served as Denso Buell’s reserve rider for the past 18 months, with three previous substitute appearances in the top-tier series. His best finish came at the 2024 Virginia Motocross Classic in May, where he finished 4th, just 0.7 seconds behind the final podium spot. Team officials noted that Ellis was selected over other reserve options due to his extensive experience testing on the Potomac Raceway circuit, as well as his strong recent performance in developmental series events. The Potomac Nats is set to kick off this Saturday, with 122 riders competing for a share of the $500,000 prize pool, and Denso Buell currently sits just 18 points behind series leaders Monster Energy Yamaha in the team championship standings, making Ellis’ performance a critical factor in the team’s 2024 title chase.

Huge bummer to hear Matt is out! I drove 3 hours from Pennsylvania just to watch him race this weekend, but I’m still really excited to see what Chip can do. He’s looked incredibly sharp in his last few substitute appearances, and I think he’s got a real shot at a podium finish for Denso Buell.
This is such a massive career opportunity for Ellis. He’s been grinding in the developmental ranks for years, and if he puts up a strong result this weekend while Matt is sidelined, he could easily lock in a full-time factory ride for the 2025 season. People shouldn’t sleep on his speed, he’s more than capable of competing with the top 5 riders in the series.
Denso Buell made the absolute right call picking Ellis as the substitute. He’s logged more practice laps at the Potomac track than any other reserve rider on their roster, and having Matt in the pits as an on-site consultant will eliminate almost all of his learning curve. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he finishes in the top 3 this weekend, even with the last-minute call-up.
