The 2024 French Open men’s singles fourth round is set to host one of its most intriguing cross-generational matchups as Argentine rising star Juan Manuel Cerundolo takes on Italian veteran and former Grand Slam finalist Matteo Berrettini on Court Philippe-Chatrier on June 2. Coming into the clash, oddsmakers have installed Berrettini as the slight favorite, with average pre-match odds of 1.45 for a Berrettini win, while Cerundolo holds underdog odds of 2.70 across major global betting platforms.
Cerundolo, 22, has been the breakout star of this year’s Roland Garros, cruising through the first three rounds without dropping a set, including a dominant straight-sets upset of 14th seed Lorenzo Musetti in the third round. The left-handed Argentine, who grew up training on red clay in Buenos Aires, boasts elite baseline endurance, sharp cross-court forehand placement, and exceptional lateral movement that makes him incredibly hard to hit through on slow clay courts. He claimed his first ATP Tour clay title in 2021 as a teenager, and has spent the past two years refining his hard court game to complement his natural clay prowess, an adjustment that has clearly paid off in his 2024 Grand Slam run.
On the other side of the net, 28-year-old Berrettini is competing in his first full Grand Slam event after missing 10 months of 2023 with a wrist injury. The 6’5” Italian, who reached the 2021 Wimbledon final and 2021 French Open quarterfinals, has looked back to his best in Paris so far, notching wins over 7th seed Casper Ruud and qualifier Hugo Gaston to reach the fourth round. His biggest weapons are his 140+ mph first serve and brutal inside-out forehand, two shots that can end points in an instant even on slow clay, and his improved net game has allowed him to finish points early and avoid the long, physical rallies that favor clay specialists like Cerundolo.
Tennis analysts are split on the matchup, with 60% of experts polled by Tennis Channel picking Berrettini to advance in four sets, citing his big-match experience and overwhelming serving power. However, many note that Cerundolo’s lefty spin will force Berrettini to hit a high number of backhands, his biggest technical weakness, and if the Argentine can extend points past the first three shots, he has a strong chance to pull off the upset. The winner of the matchup will advance to the quarterfinals to face the winner of the match between world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and 8th seed Holger Rune.

As a long-time Berrettini fan, I’m cautiously optimistic here. His serve has been unbreakable through the first three rounds, but Cerundolo’s lefty forehand is going to test his backhand more than any of his previous opponents this tournament. I’m picking Matteo in 4 sets, but it won’t be easy at all.
Cerundolo has been the absolute revelation of this year’s French Open! Beating Musetti in straight sets in the third round was no fluke, he’s so comfortable on clay and his movement is way better than Berrettini’s. The odds are way too favorable for Matteo, I’m putting money on Juan Manuel to pull off the upset in 5 thrilling sets.
This is such an entertaining fourth-round matchup. I love that we get to see a young rising clay-court talent go up against a proven veteran with Grand Slam final experience. No matter who wins, I’m expecting lots of big forehands, extended rallies, and maybe even a few tiebreaks. Can’t wait to tune in tomorrow!
I watched both of their third round matches and I think this is way closer than the odds suggest. Berrettini still looks a little rusty in long rallies, and Cerundolo is great at forcing those kinds of exchanges. If the weather is hot and the court plays slower, I think Cerundolo has a real shot to take this.
