Can Bruno Fernandes Secure Personal Awards Double To Edge Out Arsenal Stars Following 2024/25 Premier League Title Triumph?

Key keywords: Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United, 2024/25 Premier League title, Premier League Player of the Season, PFA Players' Player of the Year, Arsenal, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, personal awards double As the 2024/25 Premier League campaign draws to a close following Manchester United’s dramatic title win on the final matchday, the debate over the season’s top individual honors is reaching fever pitch, with Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes emerging as a shock candidate to claim both the official Premier League Player of the Season and PFA Players’ Player of the Year awards, potentially beating out pre-season favorites from Arsenal. Fernandes has been the undisputed heartbeat of United’s title-winning side, putting up career-best numbers of 18 goals and 21 assists across 38 league appearances, while also leading the squad as captain through a series of high-stakes fixtures, including a last-minute winning goal against direct title rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford in April that effectively swung the title race in United’s favor. The Portuguese playmaker’s work rate, creative output, and ability to deliver in high-pressure moments have won him widespread praise from pundits and fans alike, with many arguing that his status as the standout performer on the league’s best team should make him the automatic choice for both awards. However, he faces stiff competition from two Arsenal stars who have been equally integral to their side’s near-miss title challenge and FA Cup triumph. Bukayo Saka, the Gunners’ right winger, ended the league season with 22 goals and 16 assists, making him the highest-scoring wide player in the division, while Declan Rice, Arsenal’s midfield anchor, led the league in interceptions, progressive passes, and duel success rate among central midfielders, cementing his status as one of the best defensive midfielders in world football. Both players were widely tipped to sweep the individual awards as recently as March, when Arsenal held a five-point lead at the top of the table, before a late slump saw them finish two points behind United. Historical data favors Fernandes’ chances: in 11 of the last 15 Premier League seasons, the official Player of the Season award has gone to a member of the title-winning squad, and the PFA award has followed the same trend in 10 of those 15 years. Still, voting for the PFA award is carried out by fellow professional players, many of whom have highlighted Saka and Rice as their toughest opponents this season, while the official award is voted on by a panel of pundits and fans, who may prioritize title success over raw individual numbers. The results of both awards are set to be announced at the Premier League’s annual end-of-season gala on May 28, with fans across the country waiting to see if Fernandes can make history with his unlikely double, or if the Arsenal pair will deny him the honor.

Bruno absolutely deserves this double! He carried United’s midfield for the entire season, popped up with match-winning goals when we needed them most, and led the team to the title after 11 years. It would be a total robbery if either of the Arsenal players takes it home ahead of him.

C’mon, let’s be realistic here. Saka was far more consistent across the whole campaign, and Rice completely transformed Arsenal’s midfield the second he joined. Bruno had a great season but let’s not act like the title win is the only metric that matters. Both Arsenal stars have better individual stats in their respective positions, they deserve way more recognition.

I think it’s going to be incredibly tight. The PFA award will likely go to Saka because players tend to vote for peers who they’ve struggled against on the pitch, but the Premier League official Player of the Season will probably go to Bruno as the face of the title-winning side. I don’t see him taking both, honestly.

The awards double is rare for a reason—you need to be head and shoulders above every other player in the league to pull it off. Bruno is a fantastic player, but he’s not head and shoulders above Rice and Saka this season. I’d be genuinely shocked if he walks away with both honors.
