NASCAR Cup Series Results from Pocono: William Byron Scores Third-Place Finish to Strengthen Playoff Position

Key keywords: NASCAR Cup Series Pocono 2024 results, William Byron third place finish, Pocono Raceway Tricky Triangle, Hendrick Motorsports, 2024 NASCAR Playoff standings, Denny Hamlin Pocono victory, Kyle Larson runner-up, NASCAR regular season points The 2024 NASCAR Cup Series stop at Pennsylvania’s Pocono Raceway, nicknamed the Tricky Triangle for its unique three-turn layout, delivered high-stakes action for drivers and fans alike over the weekend, with Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron locking in a hard-fought third-place finish to boost his regular season and playoff positioning. The 200-lap, 500-mile race saw Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin claim his record-extending 7th career victory at Pocono, while Byron’s Hendrick teammate Kyle Larson crossed the line in second place. Byron entered the weekend sitting second in the regular season standings, 17 points behind Larson, and looked to cut into that gap with a strong run. He qualified 6th for the race and ran comfortably in the top 5 for the first 100 laps, navigating the track’s tricky pit entry and avoiding multiple on-track incidents that took out several playoff contenders, including Ryan Blaney and Austin Cindric, who were involved in a 4-car crash on lap 127 that triggered a full-course caution. Byron’s pit crew executed two near-perfect green-flag stops earlier in the race, lifting him from 5th to 3rd place ahead of the caution, putting him in prime position to fight for a podium spot in the final stretch. In the last 15 laps, Byron fended off constant pressure from Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell, who had fresher tires after pitting under the lap 127 caution, to hold onto third place. The finish earned Byron 6 additional regular season points and 1 playoff point, cutting Larson’s lead in the regular season standings to just 11 points with only three races left before the playoff field is locked in. In his post-race interview, Byron noted that he was thrilled with the result, pointing out that passing is extremely difficult at Pocono and that his team’s strategy was the key to his podium finish. He added that the team is focused on closing the gap to Larson for the regular season title, which awards an extra 15 playoff points to the winner, a massive advantage heading into the 10-race playoff run. Hendrick Motorsports now has 12 podium finishes across its four drivers in the 2024 season, the most of any team in the Cup Series, cementing its status as the favorite to claim the 2024 championship title.

As a long-time Hendrick Motorsports fan, I’m absolutely thrilled to see William Byron pick up another podium finish this season. He’s been the most consistent driver on the grid all year, and this Pocono result just confirms he’s a legitimate threat to win the Cup this year. I can’t wait to see if he can overtake Larson for the regular season title in the next three races.

I’ve been attending Pocono races for 22 years, and Byron’s drive in the final 15 laps was some of the best defensive driving I’ve ever seen at the Tricky Triangle. He held off Bell who had way fresher tires, that third place was 100% earned. He’s easily one of the most underrated drivers competing right now.

This was such a fun race to watch from start to finish. Hamlin’s 7th Pocono win is obviously historic, but Byron’s third place feels like the bigger story for the playoff picture. He’s closing in on Larson fast, and the battle for the regular season title is going to make the next three races must-watch TV for any NASCAR fan.
