William Byron Scores First Top-Five Finish Since March at Pocono

Key keywords: William Byron, Pocono Raceway, NASCAR Cup Series, top-five finish, Hendrick Motorsports, 2024 NASCAR season, stock car racing, NASCAR Playoffs, Rudy Fugle 26-year-old Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron ended a nearly four-month drought of top-five finishes with a standout third-place result at Pocono Raceway this past weekend, marking his best on-track performance since he took second place at Phoenix Raceway back in March 2024. After a red-hot start to the 2024 campaign that included a win at Daytona International Speedway and the runner-up finish at Phoenix, Byron faced a brutal string of misfortunes across 12 consecutive races. He suffered a late-race engine failure at Atlanta that dropped him out of the top 5 in the final two laps, got caught up in a multi-car pileup at Talladega that forced him to finish 32nd, and struggled with persistent handling issues on intermediate tracks that left him hovering outside the top 10 in most race weekends even when he showed strong practice and qualifying speed. He also lost 10 points to a post-race equipment penalty at Dover in May, further complicating his path to a solid playoff spot. Coming into Pocono, nicknamed the "Tricky Triangle" for its unique three-turn, high-speed layout, Byron and his No. 24 crew led by crew chief Rudy Fugle spent extra private practice sessions testing tire wear strategies and adjusting the car’s downforce settings to adapt to the track’s rough, worn pavement. He qualified 7th for the 400-mile event, and stayed inside the top 10 for all three stages of the race, picking up 10 valuable stage points in the process before making a late-race pass on Denny Hamlin of Joe Gibbs Racing with 12 laps remaining to lock in his third-place finish. In his post-race press conference, Byron emphasized that the result was a huge morale boost for his team as they head into the final stretch of the regular season before the NASCAR Playoffs kick off in September. "We’ve been so close so many times these past few months, but something always seemed to go wrong at the last minute," Byron told reporters. "To finally put together a full, clean race here at Pocono, where I’ve always had a lot of success earlier in my career, feels amazing. We know we’ve got the speed to compete for wins every weekend, and this result proves we’re back on track to fight for the championship this year." The top-five finish also moves Byron up two spots to 6th place in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series driver standings, with 558 points, just 42 points behind current points leader Kyle Larson, his Hendrick Motorsports teammate. Team owner Rick Hendrick also praised Byron’s performance in a post-race statement, noting that the No. 24 team’s consistent work over the past month to fix their handling issues has paid off exactly when they needed it most.

I’ve been rooting for William all season, it’s so good to see him finally get the finish he deserves! He’s had such brutal bad luck the past few months, but anyone who watches the races closely knows he’s had the speed to compete for wins every weekend. Can’t wait to see him get back to victory lane at the next race!

This result is a total game-changer for Byron’s playoff prospects. Before Pocono, he was at real risk of dropping into the wildcard positions and having to fight for a spot on wins alone, but now he’s solidly inside the top 10 and has all the momentum going into the summer stretch. Hendrick is clearly figuring out their intermediate car setup again, and Byron is going to be a real threat for the title this year.

That late pass on Denny Hamlin was so impressive! Byron drove perfectly the entire race, no mistakes, no reckless moves, just consistent fast laps the whole 400 miles. Pocono has always been a great track for him, I knew he’d perform well here once the team got the car setup right. It’s so awesome to see the No. 24 back up front where it belongs.

As a long-time Hendrick fan, I’m so relieved to see William turn his season around. Him and Rudy Fugle are such a talented duo, they just needed to catch a break without mechanical issues or crashes ruining their day. This top 5 isn’t a fluke, I guarantee we’ll see him get at least one more win before the regular season ends.
