The 2024 edition of the Troféu do Algarve, one of Europe’s most well-regarded pre-season football competitions held annually across venues in southern Portugal’s Algarve region, has drawn global football fan attention after rising Flamengo prospect Wallace Yan scored the Brazilian Serie A giant’s second goal in their group stage fixture against Primeira Liga side FC Famalicão on Thursday.
Flamengo traveled to Portugal earlier this month as part of their 2024 pre-season campaign, designed to help the squad build match fitness, test new tactical systems under head coach Tite, and prepare for their upcoming campaigns in the Campeonato Brasileiro, Copa Libertadores and Copa do Brasil. The Rio de Janeiro-based club is among 12 top teams from Europe and South America invited to participate in this year’s Troféu do Algarve, which offers competitive warm-up fixtures ahead of the 2024/25 European domestic season and the start of the 2024 Brazilian top-flight season.
In the 38th minute of the first half against Famalicão, 19-year-old Wallace Yan, a product of Flamengo’s renowned youth academy who was promoted to the senior squad in late 2023, connected with a pinpoint cross from left wing-back Ayrton Lucas to strike a clinical left-footed volley into the top corner of the net, extending Flamengo’s lead to 2-0. The goal marked Yan’s third senior goal for the club across pre-season fixtures, and came just 26 minutes after striker Pedro opened the scoring for Flamengo from the penalty spot.
While Famalicão pulled one back in the 72nd minute via a strike from forward Toni Martínez, Flamengo held on to secure a 2-1 victory, lifting them to the top of their group with seven points from three fixtures and securing their spot in the tournament’s semi-final round, where they will face Primeira Liga powerhouse Sporting CP next Tuesday.
Post-match, Tite praised Yan’s performance, noting that the young forward has shown consistent improvement throughout the pre-season tour. “Wallace has incredible spatial awareness and composure in front of goal for a player his age,” Tite told reporters. “This goal is a reward for all the hard work he has put in at training, and he will definitely be in contention for regular first-team minutes when our domestic campaign kicks off next month.”
The match was attended by more than 8,000 fans, including thousands of Brazilian expats based across Europe who traveled to the Algarve to support Flamengo, with Yan’s goal sparking wild celebrations in the away stands.

@FlaNation2024: Wallace Yan is the future of our front line! That volley was absolute perfection, I can’t wait to see him score more goals in the Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa Libertadores this season. Tite has to give him more regular minutes, he’s way too talented to sit on the bench.
@LigaPortugalFan: I was at the game in Faro yesterday, and Wallace Yan’s movement off the ball was so impressive for a 19-year-old. Flamengo brought a really strong squad to the Troféu do Algarve this year, they’re definitely the favorites to win the whole tournament.
@YouthFootyObserver: Yan’s rise through Flamengo’s academy has been incredible to watch. This goal against a top-flight Portuguese side is just further proof that he’s ready for senior level football. It’s no surprise that a few Premier League clubs are already scouting him, he has all the attributes to be a world-class striker.
