Homa, who currently sits 8th in the 2024 FedEx Cup standings, explained that his decision stems from two core factors: overwhelming schedule fatigue and a desire to prioritize time with his young family ahead of the final stretch of the PGA Tour season. "Over the past 12 weeks, I have traveled to 13 different cities across three separate continents for tour events, major championships, and sponsor commitments," Homa shared in his post. "I missed my 2-year-old son’s first ever tee-ball game last month, and I haven’t had more than two consecutive days at home with my wife and our 4-month-old daughter since she was born. I can feel my energy dipping both on and off the course, and pushing through another week of international travel right now would do more harm than good for my performance long term."
Crucially, Homa also noted that he already secured his qualification for the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon back in May, after finishing in the top 10 of the PGA Championship, eliminating the main incentive for many top players to compete in the Scottish Open, which awards 3 final Open spots to top-finishing non-qualified players. He added that he will still complete two days of dedicated links-style practice at a private course in California next week before traveling directly to Scotland for the Open Championship, so he will not lose practice time on the style of course he will face at Royal Troon.
Scottish Open tournament organizers released a short statement on Tuesday saying they fully respect Homa’s decision, and welcome him to return to compete in the event in future years. Fellow PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy also voiced his support for Homa’s call, noting that the packed cross-continental schedule for top players this season has made balancing professional and personal life extremely challenging for everyone on tour.
