U.S. Soccer Star Christian Pulisic Suffers Leg Fracture in USMNT's 2022 World Cup Knockout Loss to Belgium

Key keywords: Christian Pulisic fractured leg, USMNT 2022 World Cup, USA vs Belgium World Cup clash, Pulisic World Cup injury, FIFA World Cup knockout stage, US men's national soccer team, Thibaut Courtois collision, Christian Pulisic recovery update The 2022 FIFA World Cup round of 16 clash between the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) and Belgium at Al Rayyan Stadium on December 3, 2022, ended in heartbreak for American fans, as star winger Christian Pulisic suffered a confirmed leg fracture in the 0-1 loss that eliminated the U.S. from the tournament. Pulisic, the 24-year-old AC Milan forward and USMNT’s undisputed offensive core, had been the most dangerous player on the pitch through the first 42 minutes of the match, repeatedly tearing through Belgium’s backline with his pace and dribbling ability. The injury occurred when Pulisic ran onto a through ball from teammate Weston McKennie, entering the penalty area as Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois charged off his line to block the shot. Pulisic lifted his effort inches over the crossbar, but his right lower leg collided directly with Courtois’s knee in the process. He collapsed to the turf immediately, clutching his leg in visible pain as medical staff rushed to treat him. After a 6-minute on-field evaluation, Pulisic initially attempted to return to play, taking three tentative steps before signaling he could not continue. He was stretchered off the pitch and taken directly to a local hospital for scans, which confirmed a fractured right fibula. Post-match medical updates stated Pulisic would require 8 to 10 weeks of recovery time, ruling him out of AC Milan’s upcoming Serie A, Coppa Italia, and UEFA Champions League fixtures through mid-February 2023. Belgium scored the only goal of the match in the 67th minute, when midfielder Kevin De Bruyne converted a cutback pass from Romelu Lukaku. The USMNT pushed for an equalizer for the remainder of the second half and stoppage time, but lacked the creative edge Pulisic had provided, failing to register a single shot on target after his substitution. USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter told reporters after the match that Pulisic’s injury was a clear turning point: “Christian was driving everything for us offensively. Losing him changed the dynamic of the game completely, and we couldn’t find the same rhythm without him. Our priority right now is supporting him through his recovery.” Pulisic later posted a statement on his social media accounts, writing, “I’m devastated I couldn’t finish the match and help my team advance. This team has come so far, and I’m proud of every single one of my teammates. Thank you to all the fans for the support – I’ll be back stronger soon.”

Devastated to see Pulisic go down like that. He was our best player on the pitch by a mile, and if he had stayed on we definitely would’ve put at least one past Courtois. Wishing him a speedy recovery, he’s the heart of this entire USMNT generation.

That collision was totally accidental, no fault on Courtois at all, but it’s such a shame to see a world-class talent get knocked out of the World Cup with a serious injury. Belgium didn’t even look that sharp even after they scored; the U.S. really should’ve converted one of their first-half chances before Pulisic got hurt.

As an AC Milan fan, I’m gutted we’re losing him for 2+ months right when we’re fighting for the Serie A title and a deep run in the Champions League. But first and foremost, I hope he heals fully and doesn’t rush back before he’s 100% fit – his long-term health matters more than any short-term result for the club.

We got the win as Belgium fans, but I would’ve much rather seen a full 90 minutes with both teams at full strength. Pulisic was causing our backline all sorts of problems before the injury, he’s such an exciting player to watch. Hope he’s back on the pitch as soon as possible.
